- метка A (вижу решение целиком), B (вижу тему и первый ход), C (не вижу даже темы);
- оценка в минутах — сколько, по-твоему, займёт;
Python —
ENWhat is being measured today
For six days you built technique in a calm setting: the topic was named, the method was known, and time was unlimited. Today we check whether that technique survives on paper under a timer. This is a separate skill; it does not appear by itself.
Four observable things are measured, and none is mathematics:
- Labeling all eight problems in the first ten minutes: label, estimate, topic word.
- Respecting the 12-minute cutoff and the 25-minute ceiling — no endless attempts.
- Three final passes, strictly in order: blank fields, format, plausibility.
- Eight filled fields by the end of the allotted time.
The number of problems solved is a by-product. It will be larger the more strictly these four are followed.
The first ten minutes: label, do not calculate
The rule is simple and strict: do not perform a single calculation in the first ten minutes. Not on paper, not aloud. Write three things for each of the eight problems:
- Label A (I can see the whole solution), B (I see the topic and first move), or C (I cannot even see the topic);
- Estimate in minutes — how long you expect the problem to take;
- Topic word — one word naming what the problem is about.
This is the same for Mock 1, Mock 2, and the exam: you will write these same three things on September 3 for Mock No. 2 and on September 4 for the attempt.
Label
| Label | When to use it | What it means |
|---|
| A | I can see the whole solution | Only arithmetic remains |
| B | I see the topic and first move | There is a risk of getting stuck |
| C | I cannot even see the topic | It goes last or not at all |
The label is about you, not objective difficulty. A problem the whole world considers easy but you cannot see is C, and there is no shame in that. Labeling is for planning, not self-evaluation: lie to yourself and you break the plan.
Estimate in minutes
Next to the label, write the number of minutes in which you expect to close the problem. The estimate will almost certainly be too low, and that is fine: its job is not to predict time, but to set the order.
In the evening, the most useful number of the day is calculated from these same estimates. Optimism factor = actual time divided by the estimate from the labeling. It is calculated for problems brought to an answer. We collect it for the first time today, refine it on September 3 in Mock No. 2, and multiply every time estimate by it on September 4. That is why estimates are always recorded — today, in Mock No. 2, and in the attempt itself.
Topic word
One word: “counting,” “complement,” “Bayes,” “indicator,” “derivative,” “limit.” This is exactly the recognition skill that mixed practice exists for. If the word does not come, the label is automatically C, however familiar the problem looks.
Write the trap while readingAnything that catches your eye — “exactly” versus “at least,” a ban on zero in the first digit, “distinct” versus “identical,” the domain $x > 0$, the word “independent” — goes in the margin at once. An hour later, when you reach the problem, your eyes will be tired and you will not notice it a second time. This is how problems you “know how to solve” are lost.
The 150-minute layout
| Time | What you do | Rule |
|---|
| 0:00–0:10 | Read all eight | No calculations. Label, estimate, topic word |
| 0:10–0:45 | All A problems | In increasing estimate order, starting with the shortest. Check answer format on the first one |
| 0:45–1:45 | All B problems | Attempt cutoff — 12 minutes; problem ceiling — 25 minutes total |
| 1:30 | Break | One minute: stand up, look away from the screen, sit down |
| 1:45–2:10 | C and returns | Python, enumeration, a sensible estimate instead of a blank |
| 2:10–2:30 | Close the sheet | Three passes strictly in order: blank fields, format, plausibility |
This is a compressed version of the four-hour schedule from the “Reference guide”: its same five phases take 10, 80, 90, 40, and 20 minutes. Only the three working phases are compressed: 80, 90, and 40 minutes for A, B, and “C and returns” become 35, 60, and 25. None of the rule numbers scales: ten minutes for labeling at the beginning, 12 minutes per attempt, 25 minutes per problem, and twenty minutes for closing the sheet at the end are exactly the same today as on September 4. That is why there can be no proportional relationship between the mock schedule and the exam schedule — the edges are fixed, only the middle shrinks, and those edges transfer to September 4 without relearning.
Take problems in increasing estimate order within each label: all A first, starting with the shortest, then B, then C. Problem numbers mean nothing. Authors do not sort problems by difficulty, and the first problem on the sheet is just as likely to be the hardest. Start with the shortest A: it is where you check how the system accepts the answer format; doing that on the most expensive problem would be wasteful.
There are two scheduled breaks, by the clock rather than by how you feel: at 1:30, one minute (stand up, look away from the screen, sit down), and at 2:30, three minutes and water. In the compressed mock only the first fits inside; 2:30 is the finish. Stand up at 1:30 even if you are mid-calculation.
The 12-minute attempt cutoff
If the problem has not moved after 12 minutes in one attempt, mark it “return,” write in one line where you stopped, and leave. The problem’s original label does not change. If no expression has appeared where only numbers remain to be substituted, the attempt is over. Recording where you stopped is mandatory: without that line, the return starts from zero and consumes another twelve minutes.
The label does not change on purpose: C is the initial label from the scan, not a punishment for a failed attempt. A problem labeled B in the morning stays B even if the first attempt fails.
The filter after the first attempt
If after the first attempt you cannot say in one sentence exactly what is missing, move the problem to the end of the queue and take it last. Filtering changes the queue but does not close the problem: only the 25-minute ceiling closes it.
There is exactly one check, and it is verbal: say aloud what was missing. “I cannot see how to compute the numerator,” “I do not know how to evaluate this integral,” “I do not remember the sector-area formula” — if you can say the sentence, the problem stays in its place in the queue. If all you can say is “it is not working,” move it to the end: right now it costs more than any remaining problem, and an hour later, after three problems are closed, it may solve itself.
The 25-minute total ceiling
After 25 minutes total across all attempts, write a sensible estimate in the field and close the problem for good. There is no return. No “five more minutes”: 25 is an exit, not a warning.
Twenty-five minutes is one sixth of the mock for eight problems: only two other problems cost more, and you will not even see them if this one consumes you.
A sign of getting stuckThe thought “it is about to work,” arriving for the second time in a row on the same problem, is not evidence that you are close; it is physiology: your brain does not want to give up the time already invested. Economists call this the sunk-cost fallacy, and it grows stronger the more you have spent. The moment you catch it a second time, stand up, take three breaths, and take the shortest remaining problem by estimate.
Return
A return is made only after a complete pass through all eight problems. Not “when an idea appears” and not “I am almost remembering it.” The reason is simple: until you complete the pass, you do not know whether a cheaper problem is waiting among the rest.
A return starts not with solving but with rereading the entire statement aloud, from zero. Half of returns end with the first sentence: you discover that you misread the statement, and no mathematics needed fixing.
Plausibility check
Spend twenty seconds on the answer; this catches about half of mistakes. There are five kinds of checks, and at least one applies almost always.
- Range. A probability is in $[0,1]$, a count is a nonnegative integer, an average lies within the range of values, and $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$.
- Direction. An observation must move the probability in the indicated direction. The posterior probability of a hypothesis supported by the observation cannot be lower than its prior probability.
- Upper and lower bounds. For counting problems, compute an obviously larger case by removing a restriction and an obviously smaller case by tightening it. The answer must lie strictly between them; both bounds can be found mentally in half a minute.
- Order of magnitude. Estimate the answer roughly in one line before writing a careful formula. A difference by a factor of several signals a lost multiplier, not a reason to rewrite the solution.
- Numerical substitution. For a limit, substitute $x = 0.01$ and compare. For an extremum, evaluate the function at two neighboring points and check that the proposed value is smaller than both. For a derivative, compare with a difference quotient. Thirty seconds in Python.
Answer formatFour digits after the decimal point, a period as separator, no spaces or units. Integers have no decimal part. Add zeros: the answer $-0.37$ is entered as -0.3700. Check the format on the first problem, not the eighth.
Closing the sheet: three passes in strict order
The last 20 minutes are reserved for this — both on September 4 and today. This is a fixed rule, and compressing the mock does not scale it with the working phases: today solving stops at 2:10; on September 4 it stops at 3:40. The order is the same and is never rearranged:
- Blank fields. Put a sensible estimate in every blank field. A blank is worth exactly as much as a wrong answer, and there is no penalty for a wrong one.
- Format all eight. Four digits after the decimal point, a period as separator, no spaces or units.
- Plausibility. Probability in $[0,1]$, count a nonnegative integer, average within the range of values, $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$, and the right order of magnitude.
Every number written in Step 1 must go through Steps 2 and 3 along with all the others. An estimate put in a blank field and failing the format check is still a blank, just one that cost a minute.
A sensible estimate is not invented from thin air: if a probability problem seems to describe a rare event rather than a common one, $0.1$ conveys more than a blank. If it is a counting problem and you know an upper bound, write half that bound.
Python is a legal tool
Justification is not accepted in the online round, so a numerical answer is as valid as an analytical one. Python saves the most time in three cases:
- Complete enumeration. The outcome space is finite and small: enumerate it and count the fraction. Four lines, no risk of a combinatorics mistake.
- Monte Carlo. The space is large but can be simulated. A million trials gives about three correct digits; with four required, it checks an analytical answer rather than replacing it.
- Numerical checking. A limit, derivative, or minimum can be checked by substitution in half a minute, even after a formula has produced the answer.
Break
The twenty minutes between the mock and the review are not rest; they are part of the method.
Why review after a breakRight after the mock, you remember the path of your reasoning and unconsciously defend it: when rereading your solution, you see not what is written but what you meant. After twenty minutes, the link between the text and your intention breaks, and you look at your solution as if it were someone else’s. The holes become visible.
Cold review: three diagnoses
Every unfinished or incorrect problem gets exactly one written diagnosis. The labels are the same today, on Mock No. 2, and on September 4:
| Diagnosis | What it means | The remedy |
|---|
| failed to recognize the topic | You did not understand what the problem was about | Triggers: what detail in the statement should have given it away |
| did not know the method | You recognized the topic but did not know the technique | Theory and a flashcard: write the method separately |
| execution broke down | You knew the method but lost the arithmetic, sign, bound, or format | Attention to the specific type of mistake |
The third diagnosis is the most valuable and the most uncomfortable: you want to write “I was careless,” but that is an excuse, not a diagnosis. Name the exact location: arithmetic on the third line, a missed boundary case, a misread condition, or the wrong one of two similar formulas. Only such a record changes behavior.
Errors of the first type are fixed by practice, the second by theory, and the third only by your own list, which you reread before every mock. Only the third type goes in the log.
What to do with the number solvedThere is no scale saying “this many out of eight means that” and there will not be one: the official passing score has not been announced, and the number solved on a compressed mock is comparable neither to the exam nor even to Mock No. 2. Today measures the protocol, not the result, and all four measurements are about behavior.
Do not be upset if the number is small today. Mock No. 1 is deliberately on Day 7: half the program is still ahead, and the mock’s job is to show gaps, not successes. A poor result today costs far less than a poor result on September 4.
