RU

EN

By evening, you will have lived through a full four-hour exam once: in the first ten minutes you recorded three things for each of the eight problems—the label, a time estimate, and a topic word—you spent no more than 25 minutes total on any one problem, stood up at both scheduled marks, and stopped solving at 3:40, using the last 20 minutes for three passes: empty fields, format, plausibility. All eight lines are filled; none is blank. You will also have a refined optimism coefficient—the one used to multiply every time estimate tomorrow.

EN

Eight problems and twelve working days cannot divide evenly into one another, so today’s mock cannot and will not cover everything. It touches eight days, one problem per day, in the ratio expected tomorrow: two counting and probability problems, two analysis problems, two linear-algebra problems, and two algorithms problems. The program is completed not by this mock alone but by the pair of mocks: what is missing today appeared in Mock #1 on August 28.

You will learn which problem came from which day in the evening review, not before the start. Recognizing the type is half the skill, and giving it away in advance would ruin the mock: on the real exam, statements are not labeled by topic. The named table “problem — topic — day — where to find more of the same” is below in “How to work today”; open it in the evening together with the review. It also states honestly which days are not represented today at all.

Day 7 is a special case. That mock ran for 2 hours 30 minutes over eight problems—a different set, with only the count in common. Its purpose was scarcity: learn to abandon a problem. Today you have exactly as much time as tomorrow, so “I did not have time” is no longer an excuse. What fails is not speed.

EN

Cards are drawn without replacement from a standard 52-card deck. Find the expected number of cards that must be drawn until both a king and a queen have appeared, counting the final card. Round to four decimal places.

Hint
RU

EN

The positions of the first king and the first queen are both handled by the gaps lemma. Their maximum is harder to compute directly: recall the identity $\max + \min = $ sum, and interpret the minimum here.

Solution
RU

$$\E = \frac{n+1}{k+1}$$

$$\E = \frac{n-k}{k+1} + 1 = \frac{n+1}{k+1}$$

$$\max\{\xi,\eta\} + \min\{\xi,\eta\} = \xi + \eta$$

$$\E\xi = \E\eta = \frac{52+1}{4+1} = \frac{53}{5}, \qquad \E\min = \frac{52+1}{8+1} = \frac{53}{9}$$$$\E\max = \frac{53}{5} + \frac{53}{5} - \frac{53}{9} = \frac{689}{45} \approx 15.3111$$

EN

Gaps lemma. In a deck of $n$ cards, suppose $k$ are marked. The expected number of cards drawn up to and including the first marked card is

$$\E = \frac{n+1}{k+1}$$

Circular proof. Add one marked card to the top and join the $n+1$ cards into a circle, then rotate the circle uniformly at random. The $k+1$ marked cards divide the circle into $k+1$ gaps of unmarked cards. Rotation permutes these gaps, so they have the same expected size, $\frac{n-k}{k+1}$.

Starting from the added card, reaching the first original marked card requires crossing one gap and then drawing the marked card itself:

$$\E = \frac{n-k}{k+1} + 1 = \frac{n+1}{k+1}$$

Apply the lemma. Let $\xi$ be the position of the first king and $\eta$ the position of the first queen. We need $\E\max\{\xi,\eta\}$. Use

$$\max\{\xi,\eta\} + \min\{\xi,\eta\} = \xi + \eta$$

Here $\min\{\xi,\eta\}$ is the position of the first among eight marked cards: the four kings and four queens together. The lemma gives

$$\E\xi = \E\eta = \frac{52+1}{4+1} = \frac{53}{5}, \qquad \E\min = \frac{52+1}{8+1} = \frac{53}{9}$$$$\E\max = \frac{53}{5} + \frac{53}{5} - \frac{53}{9} = \frac{689}{45} \approx 15.3111$$
What to carry into YMLS

Two techniques here apply far beyond this problem.

First, the $\frac{n+1}{k+1}$ gaps lemma. It resolves an entire class of “how many draws until the first target?” questions. You derived its small version using indicators in b0405; here it is applied three times—to kings, queens, and all eight marked cards.

Second, the identity $\max + \min$. When the maximum is hard and the minimum easy, compute the minimum and subtract. This is a general method, not a card trick; it already appeared in the problems about two dice and two uniform variables.

EN

Solution
RU

3$: $7 \oplus 3 = 0111_2 \oplus 0011_2 = 0100_2 = 4$.

from itertools import combinations
print(min(x ^ y for x, y in combinations(G, 2))) # 4

EN

For the given data, the answer is 4, attained by 7 and 3: $7 \oplus 3 = 0111_2 \oplus 0011_2 = 0100_2 = 4$.

from itertools import combinations
print(min(x ^ y for x, y in combinations(G, 2))) # 4

Pair enumeration takes $O(n^2)$ time and involves only 45 pairs here. It is too slow under olympiad constraints ($n$ up to $2\cdot10^5$, values below $2^{30}$), so a different approach is required.

The appropriate solution is a binary prefix tree, or binary trie.

Store the binary representations of the numbers in a tree as strings of length $K=30$, from the most significant bit to the least significant. When a new number $X$ arrives, perform two operations:

  1. Find a number $Y$ in the trie minimizing its XOR with $X$. Descend from the root. At each depth, first try the branch with the same bit as $X$, which contributes zero at this position. If that branch does not exist, take the only available branch.
  2. Insert $X$ into the trie.

Maintain the answer as the minimum over all insertions.

Why the greedy descent is correct. Suppose both branches are available at depth $d$. Matching the bit contributes zero at this position, while differing contributes one, with value $2^{K-d}$. One more significant bit outweighs all less significant bits combined, as established in the Bridge section. Therefore matching the more significant bit is preferable to any possible gain below it, and the greedy choice is optimal.

The time and space complexity are $O(NK)$, where $K$ is the number of bits.

A third method for checking

The rule from the Triggers section applies: the minimum XOR is always attained by two adjacent values in sorted order. Here is the proof. Let $x<y<z$, and let $b$ be the most significant bit at which $x$ and $z$ differ. At this bit, $x$ has zero and $z$ has one, so $x\oplus z \ge 2^b$. All bits above $b$ coincide in $x$ and $z$. Since $y$ lies between them, it agrees with both in those higher bits. At bit $b$, either $y$ has zero, giving $x\oplus y < 2^b$, or it has one, giving $y\oplus z < 2^b$. In either case, a closer pair is strictly better than the outer pair. Thus a pair with a third number between its members never needs to be checked.

Sort the values: 3, 7, 13, 18, 25, 29, 38, 44, 52, 60. Check only nine adjacent pairs rather than forty-five. Their XORs are 4, 10, 31, 11, 4, 59, 10, 24, 8. The minimum, 4, is attained twice: $3 \oplus 7 = 4$ and $25 \oplus 29 = 4$. This agrees with exhaustive search and is an independent check.

The takeaway

The principle “a more significant bit outweighs all less significant bits combined” is universal in bitwise problems. It turns an exhaustive search into a greedy tree descent: the same kind of halving as binary search, except that the candidate set is partitioned by the next bit rather than by a numeric interval.

A full-strength version is unlikely on YMLS, but the underlying technique of processing numbers bit by bit, from most significant to least significant, may well be useful.

$$d = \frac{|\langle n, p\rangle - c|}{\|n\|} = \frac{|-1 - 9|}{3} = \frac{10}{3} \approx 3.3333$$

EN

Read the normal directly from the equation: $n=(2,-1,2)$, with norm $\|n\|=\sqrt{4+1+4}=3$. Its inner product with the point is $\langle n,p\rangle=4-1-4=-1$.

$$d = \frac{|\langle n, p\rangle - c|}{\|n\|} = \frac{|-1 - 9|}{3} = \frac{10}{3} \approx 3.3333$$
Common substitution errors

The numerator is the absolute value of the residual $\langle n,p\rangle-c$, not the sum of the coordinates and not $\langle n,p\rangle+c$. The constant term must be moved to the same side as the point evaluation. A negative residual only means that the point and the origin lie on opposite sides of the plane; it has no effect on the distance.

$$x^2 - yx - 1 = 0$$

Обозначим их $x_1(y)$ и $x_2(y)$.

$$\int_{\mathbb{R}} f\!\left(x - \tfrac1x\right)dx = \int_{\mathbb{R}}\big(|x_1'(y)| + |x_2'(y)|\big)f(y)\,dy = \int_{\mathbb{R}} f(y)\,dy = 2025$$

EN

Answer: 2025.

Idea. Consider $\varphi(x)=x-\frac1x$. On each interval $(-\infty,0)$ and $(0,+\infty)$, this function is strictly increasing and maps the interval onto the entire real line $\mathbb{R}$.

Therefore, under the change of variables, every point $y$ has exactly two preimages: the roots of

$$x^2 - yx - 1 = 0$$

Denote them by $x_1(y)$ and $x_2(y)$. By Vieta's formulas,

$$x_1(y) + x_2(y) = y$$

Differentiate this identity with respect to $y$:

$$x_1'(y) + x_2'(y) = 1$$

Both branches are increasing, so their derivatives are positive and the absolute values can be removed. Hence

$$\int_{\mathbb{R}} f\!\left(x - \tfrac1x\right)dx = \int_{\mathbb{R}}\big(|x_1'(y)| + |x_2'(y)|\big)f(y)\,dy = \int_{\mathbb{R}} f(y)\,dy = 2025$$
A check that catches a flaw in the reasoning

Test the claim computationally with a specific $f$: take the standard normal density multiplied by 2025 and evaluate both integrals numerically. Use mpmath.quad separately on $(-\infty,0)$ and $(0,+\infty)$ because the integrand varies sharply near zero. The results agree. This is not a proof, but it is an effective way to distinguish a correct argument from an attractive but false one.

The YMLS takeaway

Use the technique “a substitution that merges two branches.” When a substitution is not one-to-one, sum over all branches; the Jacobian factors often combine into something simple.

This exact form is unlikely on YMLS. A related method that appears regularly is the symmetrization $\int_a^b f(x)dx = \int_a^b f(a+b-x)dx$ from Day 8. The idea is the same: exploit the structure of the substitution instead of evaluating the integral directly.

How many different sequences of squares have this property? Give the answer for $n = 10$, $x = 4$, and $y = 7$.

EN

How can a $(k-1) \times (k-1)$ square be obtained from a $k \times k$ square? How many independent choices does each step involve?

Solution
RU

$$N = \binom{n-1}{x-1}\binom{n-1}{y-1}$$

Подставляем $n = 10$, $x = 4$, $y = 7$:

$$\binom{9}{3}\binom{9}{6} = 84 \cdot 84 = 7056$$

EN

Key observation. A $(k-1) \times (k-1)$ square can be placed inside a $k \times k$ square in exactly four ways: remove either the left or the right column, and either the top or the bottom row. The choices for rows and columns are independent.

There are $n - 1$ steps in total. At each step, one column (left or right) and one row (top or bottom) are removed.

Columns. Encode the history of column removals by a string of $n-1$ symbols: L if the left column was removed at that step and R if the right column was removed. The final cell has first coordinate $x$ exactly when a total of $x - 1$ columns were removed from the left. The number of strings with exactly $x-1$ occurrences of L is $\binom{n-1}{x-1}$; once again, the problem reduces to choosing the positions occupied by one type of symbol.

Rows. Similarly, there are $\binom{n-1}{y-1}$ possible row-removal histories.

Every pair of histories gives a distinct sequence of squares, so we multiply:

$$N = \binom{n-1}{x-1}\binom{n-1}{y-1}$$

Substituting $n = 10$, $x = 4$, and $y = 7$ gives

$$\binom{9}{3}\binom{9}{6} = 84 \cdot 84 = 7056$$
Main takeaway

Split the problem along independent axes. What looked like a search through nested squares becomes two independent strings: the order in which columns were removed and the order in which rows were removed. Whenever a problem splits into independent parts, the total count is the product of the counts for those parts. This technique will return often.

EN

“The maximum is 4” means “all results are at most 4” minus “all results are at most 3.”

Solution
RU$$\P(\max \le 4) = \left(\frac46\right)^{5}, \qquad \P(\max \le 3) = \left(\frac36\right)^{5}$$

$$\P(\max = 4) = \frac{4^{5} - 3^{5}}{6^{5}} = \frac{1024 - 243}{7776} = \frac{781}{7776} \approx 0.1004$$

EN$$\P(\max \le 4) = \left(\frac46\right)^{5}, \qquad \P(\max \le 3) = \left(\frac36\right)^{5}$$

The second event is entirely contained in the first, so their probabilities can be subtracted directly:

$$\P(\max = 4) = \frac{4^{5} - 3^{5}}{6^{5}} = \frac{1024 - 243}{7776} = \frac{781}{7776} \approx 0.1004$$
A general technique for maxima and minima

First count “at most $t$.” This is a separate condition on each roll, so its probability factors. Then take the difference of adjacent values. Counting “maximum exactly 4” directly would require separate cases according to the number of fours.

A second method enumerates all $6^5=7776$ outcomes and finds exactly 781 favorable ones. It takes thirty seconds and checks the technique itself, not merely the arithmetic.

EN

Bridge problem b1203 is the same problem with one fixed side. Determine what changes when the side is the “nearest” one.

Solution
RU

$$y > \left(x - \tfrac12\right)^{2} + \frac14$$

Парабола пересекает сторону $y = x$ там, где $\left(x-\frac12\right)^{2} + \frac14 = x$, то есть $x^{2} - 2x + \frac12 = 0$ и $x = 1 - \frac{\sqrt2}{2} \approx 0.2929$; вторая точка по симметрии — $x = \frac{\sqrt2}{2}$.

$$S = 2\int_{u_0}^{0}\left(u + \frac14 - u^{2}\right)du = \frac{\sqrt2}{3} - \frac{5}{12}, \qquad u_0 = \frac{1-\sqrt2}{2}$$$$\P = 4S = \frac{4\sqrt2 - 5}{3} \approx 0.218951$$

print((dc < db).mean())      # 0.2188293...

EN

Step 1. Partition the square. The diagonals divide it into four congruent triangles, and a different side is nearest in each one. In the bottom triangle, described by $y<x$ and $y<1-x$, the bottom side is nearest. By symmetry, it is enough to calculate the required area there and multiply by 4.

Step 2. The boundary is the same parabola as in b1203. After squaring, the condition “closer to the center than to the bottom side” becomes

$$y > \left(x - \tfrac12\right)^{2} + \frac14$$

Step 3. Integration limits. The parabola intersects the side $y=x$ when $\left(x-\frac12\right)^2+\frac14=x$, or $x^2-2x+\frac12=0$. Thus $x=1-\frac{\sqrt2}{2}\approx0.2929$; the other intersection is, by symmetry, $x=\frac{\sqrt2}{2}$.

Step 4. Integral. Between these limits, the region lies above the parabola and below a side of the triangle. With the substitution $u=x-\frac12$, the vertical width is $u+\frac14-u^2$. Symmetry about $x=\frac12$ allows us to integrate over half the region and double:

$$S = 2\int_{u_0}^{0}\left(u + \frac14 - u^{2}\right)du = \frac{\sqrt2}{3} - \frac{5}{12}, \qquad u_0 = \frac{1-\sqrt2}{2}$$$$\P = 4S = \frac{4\sqrt2 - 5}{3} \approx 0.218951$$

Simulation check.

dc = np.hypot(p[:,0] - .5, p[:,1] - .5)                    # distance to the center
db = np.minimum(np.minimum(p[:,0], 1 - p[:,0]),
                np.minimum(p[:,1], 1 - p[:,1])) # distance to the nearest side
print((dc < db).mean())      # 0.2188293...
The lesson of the day in one problem

Six million simulated points give $0.21883$, while the exact answer is $0.218951$. Three decimal places agree, but the fourth does not, so submitting the simulation result would be wrong. This is exactly what the $1/\sqrt{N}$ rule predicts: about $10^8$ trials are needed for the fourth decimal place.

The correct strategy is to use simulation to verify the region and analysis to obtain precision. If no analytical method is available, run one hundred million trials and recognize that the last digit is uncertain.

  • метка A (вижу решение целиком), B (вижу тему и первый ход), C (не вижу даже темы);
  • оценка в минутах — сколько, по-твоему, займёт;

  • перечитываешь одно предложение условия во второй раз и всё ещё не понял его;
  • ошибся в действии, которое обычно делаешь устно: сложил дроби, потерял знак;
  • пишешь, не глядя на написанное, и через минуту не помнишь, откуда взялась строка;

  • отметка времени, когда впервые захотелось встать — именно захотелось, а не когда встал;
  • номер задачи, на которой возникло желание залипнуть, и одна фраза о том, чем она затянула: знакомый вид, ощущение «вот-вот получится», жалко потраченного времени;

EN

How this mock differs from the first

Mock #1 ran for 2 hours 30 minutes over eight problems—about 19 minutes per problem. It was an abandonment regime: time was deliberately insufficient, and the entire skill was knowing when to leave.

Today gives 240 minutes for eight problems—30 minutes each—and this is tomorrow’s protocol unchanged. The regime is different: there is enough time, if you do not spill it.

A typical four-hour failure looks the same. The first two hours go smoothly, even with time to spare. In the third hour, accuracy drops without you noticing. The last hour turns into a race: answers go in without checking, and one line stays blank. The final loss is two or three problems, none of which was too difficult.

What you are training today

Not speed or erudition. Three things: enforce a time ceiling on each problem, stand up on schedule, and stop solving twenty minutes before the end—when stopping is hardest.

Time log

Draw it before starting, on paper. Six columns, one row per attempt:

#LabelStartLeaveMinutesAnswer in form
5A0:100:177yes
2A0:170:2912return
7A0:290:367yes
2A3:053:1813estimate

One line per attempt at a problem; when you return, add a second line with the same number. It costs five seconds and provides the only objective material for the evening review: four hours later, you will remember details about only the last one.

The first-column numbers are out of order—5, 2, 7—and that is correct: the queue is ordered by increasing estimate within each label, and problem numbering means nothing. A sheet where attempts go strictly 1, 2, 3 is a sheet where no order was assigned.

Read the two lines for problem 2; they contain the entire protocol. The first attempt was stopped by the cutoff: the problem had not moved in 12 minutes, so you marked “return,” wrote one line about where you were stuck, and left. The label in the column stayed A: it is the initial classification, not a punishment for an unsuccessful attempt. The second attempt began at 3:05, in the return slot and only after the full round through all eight; the problem moved this time—each minute produced a new line, so the “no progress in 12 minutes” cutoff did not apply. The ceiling stopped it: 12 + 13 = 25 minutes total, a reasonable estimate went into the field, and the problem was closed permanently. There cannot be a third line for problem 2.

The main column is “Minutes.” In the evening it will show what each time sink cost, and that number is almost always larger than it felt from the inside.

  • Label A (I see the complete solution), B (I see the topic and first move), or C (I do not even see the topic);
  • Estimate in minutes—how long you think it will take;
  • Topic word—one word describing what the problem is about.

This is exactly what you did in Mock #1 and will do tomorrow. Estimates are not decoration: they produce the optimism coefficient—actual time divided by the estimate, over problems carried through to an answer. Refine it today; tomorrow multiply every time estimate by it.

Take problems in increasing estimate within each label: all A first, starting with the shortest, then B, then C. Problem numbers mean nothing. The authors do not sort by difficulty, and number eight may easily be the easiest.

There is a separate first-round rule: screening. If, after the first attempt, you cannot state in one sentence exactly what is missing, move the problem to the end of the queue and take it last. Screening changes the queue but does not close the problem; only the 25-minute ceiling closes it.

The first ten minutes are violated most often

The temptation to start the first problem you understand is huge, and the cost of violating the rule is visible only at the end. Without classification, you follow problem numbers and may give an hour to a problem that honest classification would have placed fourth in the queue.

Two scheduled breaks

There are two breaks, by the clock: at 1:30, one minute (stand up, look away from the screen, sit down); at 2:30, three minutes and water.

By the clock, not by how you feel. Fatigue lowers accuracy before it becomes noticeable: first the number of arithmetic mistakes grows, and only then comes the feeling “I’m tired.” Waiting for the feeling means giving away half an hour of inaccurate work.

The exchange is simple. Four minutes of breaks are about one-seventh of a problem. One unnoticed arithmetic error is a whole problem. The trade is favorable.

Inside the third hour

The drop in accuracy is visible from the outside but not from inside. Recognize it by indirect signs, and know them in advance:

  • you reread one sentence of the statement and still do not understand it;
  • you make a mistake in an operation you normally do orally: add fractions incorrectly or lose a sign;
  • you write without looking at what you wrote, and a minute later cannot remember where the line came from;
  • you think “I’ll finish it, there’s only a little left.”

Any one of the four is an order to stand up, not a reason to rally. Willpower does not fix the third-hour drop: it is physiology, and movement and water treat it better than determination.

The problem you do not solve

Only a number is accepted; justification is unnecessary, and there is no penalty for a wrong answer. That gives a rule that would be pointless on a written exam: an unsolved problem still gets an answer.

Three sources for a number, in order of preference:

  1. Simulation. Calculate a probability, mean, or fraction by enumeration or random trials in five lines of code. Python is allowed on the real exam too.
  2. Special case. If the problem has a parameter $n$, calculate it by hand for $n = 1, 2, 3$. Sometimes that is enough to see a pattern and continue it.
  3. Rough estimate. A symmetric event has probability about $\frac12$; a count has the order of magnitude given by the product rule. The chance of landing near the answer is small but nonzero, while a blank has no chance at all.

The budget is strict and creates no new numbers: the first source is an ordinary attempt, so the same 12-minute cutoff applies; the third takes two minutes because a rough estimate either appears immediately or not at all.

What to record as you go

Besides answers, collect data about yourself. Three entries go directly on the time log:

  • the time when you first wanted to stand up—the moment you wanted to, not when you actually did;
  • the problem number where you wanted to get stuck, plus one phrase about what hooked you: a familiar form, the feeling “it’s almost there,” or regret over time already spent;
  • how many problems you took after completing the round through all eight.

The third number is the main one. Usually one or two problems are taken after the full round, and they decide the outcome. Zero means the first round was too slow, not that the problems were difficult.

Evening review

Use the time log, not memory. For each of the eight lines, ask three questions:

  1. Time loss or mathematical loss? A problem that reached the 25-minute ceiling and was nevertheless solved represents time loss, not mathematical loss; fix it with the cutoff and problem order, not theory.
  2. If unsolved, which of the three diagnoses? Did not recognize the topic—did not understand what the problem was about. Did not know the method—recognized the topic but not the technique. Broke down in execution—knew the method but lost the count, sign, boundary, or format. Exactly one diagnosis per problem, using the same words as in Mock #1 and tomorrow.
  3. If the answer was wrong, would it have passed a boundary check? If yes, the error is inside the solution. If not, you skipped a free check; that is a separate mistake, much cheaper to fix.
Today is the last day when a mistake is free

A bad mock today costs less than the same mistakes tomorrow. Review it not with irritation but as someone else’s record: what happened here, and what should be done differently at this point?

The last twenty minutes: closing the answer sheet

RU

Episode setup. The clock shows 3:40. Here is the state of the eight problems—first the answer’s semantic type, then the draft and the input form:

#Answer should beOn the draftIn the form
1non-integer0.18750.1875
2probability1.251.25
3integer1240blank
4non-integer3.60563,6056
5non-integerminus one half-1/2
6probabilitynothingblank
7integer1717.0000
8non-integer2.832.83

The episode’s task is not to solve problem 6 or recalculate problem 2, but to turn this table into eight valid, non-empty answers in twenty minutes. Watch the order of operations, not the numbers: it is the same in every mock and tomorrow too.

Step 1. 3:40. The first decision is to stop solving. Do not finish the thought or the line. Anything started at this mark costs more than it can win: it consumes exactly the minutes needed to fix the six defects in the table.

From here, make three passes in strict order: empty fields, format all eight, plausibility. Do not reorder them: a blank is more expensive than imprecise rounding, and a bad format zeroes out a correct number.

Step 2. 3:40–3:48. First pass: empty fields. There are two blanks, and they are closed differently. Line 3 was calculated on the draft but is blank in the form—enter it first, in ten seconds: a calculated but unsubmitted answer is worth exactly as much as an unsolved problem. Line 6 is genuinely blank, and you do not try to solve it now—spend five minutes on a reasonable estimate: if Python is available, simulate; if not, estimate by symmetry. Whatever you get is what you enter, without an internal debate about whether it deserves to be an answer. A blank is worth exactly as much as a wrong answer, and wrong answers are not penalized.

Step 3. 3:48–3:53. Second pass: format all eight, without thinking about meaning. Look only at the appearance of the numbers and scan all eight lines, not only the ones that catch your eye. Line 1 is already in format and stays as is. Line 2 needs two more digits, 1.2500; do not consider that the number is impossible yet—that is the third pass. In line 4, replace the comma with a period. In line 5, expand the fraction to the decimal $-0.5000$. In line 7, write the integer without a decimal part: 17. Line 8 needs two more digits. This pass is separate precisely because format is checked with the eyes and meaning with the head; a combined pass misses both.

Eight means eight. Both numbers filled in on the first pass go through formatting alongside the rest: 1240 is an integer with no decimal part, and the estimate in line 6 has four digits after the decimal point. Any number entered in step 1 must pass steps 2 and 3 together with all the others.

Step 4. 3:53–3:58. Third pass: plausibility. Probability in $[0,1]$, a count is a nonnegative integer, a mean lies within the value range, $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$, and the order of magnitude is sensible. Line 2: probability 1.2500 is impossible. Do not “recalculate the problem from the beginning”; find one place where the boundary was violated. There are few possibilities: probabilities of overlapping events were added, a divisor was forgotten, or a count of outcomes was used instead of a fraction. Spend two minutes, no more. If you cannot find the cause, do not leave the impossible number in the form: it is certainly wrong, whereas a valid estimate has a chance. This pass also covers all eight: line 3 is a count, so a nonnegative integer, and 1240 passes; line 6 is a probability, so its estimate must lie in $[0,1]$.

Step 5. 3:58–4:00. The final two minutes: count lines, not problems. Eight lines, all non-empty. Do not entertain a new thought: you will not have time to check it, but you have time to spoil a finished answer.

Algorithm
  1. At 3:40, stop solving in the middle of the line. Then make three separate passes, strictly in order.
  2. Empty fields: put a reasonable estimate in every blank. Transfer a draft calculation to the form; close a truly blank field with an estimate.
  3. Format all eight: four digits after the decimal point, a period as separator, no spaces or units; integers have no decimal part, and use neither fractions nor “$\approx$”.
  4. Plausibility: probability in $[0,1]$, count a nonnegative integer, mean within its value range, $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$, and a sensible order of magnitude. Replace an impossible number with a valid estimate.
  5. Any number entered on the first pass must go through the second and third with the rest. The last two minutes count lines, not problems.

Below, the topic of each of the mock’s eight problems is named. This table belongs in the 4:45–5:45 slot, when the time log is already on the desk. Do not look here before starting: labeling a problem in advance stops training recognition—and recognition is half of today’s skill.

After the review, no new theory.

Repair is tightly limited: two or three problems you failed, plus one analogue for each from the bank of the day that problem belongs to. Choose an analogue from level 3, not higher. The goal is to restore the technique, not reach a new height on the eve of the exam.

k207binary search on the answer11w1104, b1107
k208a state recurrence instead of a ready-made formula12b1204, b1205

All listed problems are levels 1–3, as the repair requires. Final problems from the same days (y0302, y0202, y1001, y0903, y0604, y0801, y1102, y1203) are nearby in the banks, but do not take them today: on the eve of an attempt, repair the technique, not the height.

Be honest about coverage. Eight problems cannot divide across twelve days, and the “Day” column shows it: eight of twelve numbers appear—2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12—exactly one problem per day. Days 3, 4, and 5—the end of the first block and entry into the second—are represented today by the single new problem k201: Bayes from day 3 sits on top of counting combinations from day 1, and that is where the block ends. There are no indicators from day 4 or derivatives from day 5 in this mock at all, and there is no separate day-1 counting problem. Mock #1 covered them: k101 is the product rule, k104 indicators, and k105 and k107 derivatives and extrema. Full program coverage comes from the two mocks together. That is why you should not redo Mock #1 today; remember instead that gaps in today’s set are not gaps in your preparation.

Do not do these things today: open topics that are not in the program, redo the entire mock, or read someone else’s SHAD-level walkthroughs. They create the feeling of work and steal sleep.

If the mock collapses completely—you run out of time, drift, or take only three of eight problems—the evening program does not change. Only the log’s conclusion changes: it becomes about behavior, not topics. There is nothing to catch up in one night, but you can change tomorrow’s protocol.

What is worth more than three solved problems

Sleep. Sleep deprivation hits working memory harder than a gap in one topic, and tomorrow you must hold a lot in mind for four hours straight. Go to bed no later than usual.

Check the technical side today, not tomorrow

The real technical check is today, in a separate fifteen-minute slot: the Yandex Contest interface, entering a decimal, running Python, importing NumPy and SymPy. Also charge the laptop and prepare a backup internet connection. On the morning of September 4, only a short five-minute “is everything open?” check remains—no setup, and not a single minute of the four hours is lost to “how do I enter this?”

This is exactly the schedule you will face the day after tomorrow. The only difference is that the real attempt is tomorrow, and there is only one.

Problems are taken in increasing estimate within each label: all A (starting with the shortest), then B, then C. Один вывод.

One conclusion. Not three, as after the first mock: three do not stay in your head before an exam; one does.

Use a strict format: “On problem N I did X because Y. Tomorrow, when I see Z, I will do W.” Vague “be more careful” does not count—it changes no action.

Write it by hand on a separate sheet and put it where you will see it tomorrow before starting. Put the time log beside it: two numbers from the log—how many minutes the longest time sink cost, and how many problems you took after the full round—work better tomorrow than any motivation.

On a separate line, write refined optimism coefficient = actual time divided by the estimate from the labeling, calculated over problems carried through to an answer. Today’s number replaces the one from Mock #1: the problem set has the same format and the time is the same as tomorrow’s. Tomorrow, multiply every estimate by it.
