Mock No. 1 and a cold review

The time shortage is deliberate: today measures not what you know, but how you behave under a timer

RU

EN

By the end of the day, you can turn eight unfamiliar problems into a plan in ten minutes: label, estimate, topic word, order. You will also know three numbers of your own — how many minutes your most expensive problem consumed, how much you missed in your time estimate, and which of the three error types is your main one. Today’s check is not the number of problems solved, but whether you followed the protocol.

EN

The mock is designed to touch all six days covered so far: five counting techniques from Day 1, the outcome model and complement counting from Day 2, the hypothesis tree and reversing the condition from Day 3, indicators and linearity from Day 4, what to do after computing a derivative from Day 5, and the asymptotics sheet from Day 6. None of the problems is labeled with its topic — that is the whole point.

Mixed practice builds skill more firmly than block practice precisely because it forces you to recognize the problem type before applying a method. When you spend an entire day on limits, there is no need to recognize them, and an illusion of mastery appears: your hand remembers, but your mind does not choose. On the exam you must choose eight times in a row, and that choice is a separate skill that has not been trained until today.

That is why today’s mock has one strict requirement: before each problem, say its topic in one word, and only then pick up the pen. Not “I roughly understand what this is about,” but one exact word. If you cannot find the word, the problem is not ready to solve, however familiar it looks.

Day 1: the multiplication rule — multiply the numbers of choices at each step, and check the phrase “for each” separately at every position
Day 1: $\binom{n}{k}$ means choosing without order, $n!$ means all permutations, and dividing by multiplicity removes duplicates
Day 2: the probability of an equally likely outcome is a fraction; “at least one” is counted through the complementary event
Day 3: Bayes’ formula is one branch divided by the sum of the branches; with equal prior probabilities, they cancel
Day 4: linearity of expectation $\E(X + Y) = \E X + \E Y$ holds without any independence; attach an indicator to the object you are counting
Day 5: the derivative of a quotient $\left(\frac{u}{v}\right)' = \frac{u'v - uv'}{v^2}$; a minimum occurs where the derivative changes sign from negative to positive
  7. День 6: первые строки листа асимптотик, в первую очередь $e^{u} = 1 + u + \frac{u^2}{2} + o(u^2)$ и $\ln(1+u) = u - \frac{u^2}{2} + o(u^2)$Day 6: the first lines of the asymptotics sheet, especially $e^{u} = 1 + u + \frac{u^2}{2} + o(u^2)$ and $\ln(1+u) = u - \frac{u^2}{2} + o(u^2)$
Answer format: four digits after the decimal point, a period as separator, no spaces or units; integers have no decimal part

EN

Factor out a common term to obtain $e^{u} - 1$, and only then expand.

Solution
RU

$$e^{\sin x} - e^{\tan x} = e^{\tan x}\left(e^{\sin x - \tan x} - 1\right)$$

При $x \to 0$ имеем $\tan x \to 0$, значит $e^{\tan x} \to 1$: на ответ он не влияет.

$$\sin x - \tan x = \left(x - \frac{x^{3}}{6}\right) - \left(x + \frac{x^{3}}{3}\right) + o(x^{4}) = -\frac{x^{3}}{6} - \frac{x^{3}}{3} + o(x^{4}) = -\frac{x^{3}}{2} + o(x^{4})$$

$$\lim_{x \to 0}\frac{-\frac{x^{3}}{2} + o(x^{4})}{x^{3}} = -\frac12 = -0.5$$

EN

Step 1. Factor out a common term.

$$e^{\sin x} - e^{\tan x} = e^{\tan x}\left(e^{\sin x - \tan x} - 1\right)$$

Step 2. Evaluate the factor. As $x \to 0$, we have $\tan x \to 0$, so $e^{\tan x} \to 1$; it does not affect the answer.

Step 3. Expand the exponent. The denominator is of order $x^{3}$, so the exponent must be known through order $x^{3}$. Assemble it from two reference-sheet formulas:

$$\sin x - \tan x = \left(x - \frac{x^{3}}{6}\right) - \left(x + \frac{x^{3}}{3}\right) + o(x^{4}) = -\frac{x^{3}}{6} - \frac{x^{3}}{3} + o(x^{4}) = -\frac{x^{3}}{2} + o(x^{4})$$

Step 4. Apply the outer function to a small quantity. The exponent tends to zero, so $e^{u} - 1 \sim u$:

$$\lim_{x \to 0}\frac{-\frac{x^{3}}{2} + o(x^{4})}{x^{3}} = -\frac12 = -0.5$$
Why factoring is essential

Without it, we would have to expand $e^{\sin x}$ and $e^{\tan x}$ separately through the third degree. That means composing two pairs of series—twice the work and twice the opportunity for error. Factoring reduces the problem to the single equivalence $e^{u} - 1 \sim u$. The same technique was practiced in bridge problem b0606.

Numerical check: at $x = 0.01$, the fraction equals $-0.5050$, approaching $-0.5$.

RU

EN

Rewrite the power as an exponential and note that its exponent tends to one, not zero.

Solution
RU

$$(1 + x)^{1/x} = \exp\left(\frac{\ln(1 + x)}{x}\right)$$

$$\frac{\ln(1 + x)}{x} = \frac{x - \frac{x^{2}}{2} + o(x^{2})}{x} = 1 - \frac{x}{2} + o(x)$$

Обозначим $u = -\frac{x}{2} + o(x)$; тогда $u \to 0$ и

$$(1 + x)^{1/x} = e^{1 + u} = e\,e^{u} \;\Longrightarrow\; (1 + x)^{1/x} - e = e\left(e^{u} - 1\right)$$

$e^{u} - 1 \sim u$:

$$\lim_{x \to 0}\frac{e\left(-\frac{x}{2} + o(x)\right)}{x} = -\frac{e}{2} \approx -1.3591$$

EN

Step 1. Immediately rewrite the variable power as an exponential.

$$(1 + x)^{1/x} = \exp\left(\frac{\ln(1 + x)}{x}\right)$$

Step 2. Expand the exponent through its second term. The denominator of the original fraction is of order $x$, so the exponent must be known through order $x$. Since that exponent is obtained by dividing by $x$, the logarithm must be expanded through $x^{2}$:

$$\frac{\ln(1 + x)}{x} = \frac{x - \frac{x^{2}}{2} + o(x^{2})}{x} = 1 - \frac{x}{2} + o(x)$$

Notice that the exponent tends to one, not zero. This is the essential feature of the problem: the exponential tends to $e$, and we need to determine how quickly it does so.

Step 3. Factor out $e$. Set $u = -\frac{x}{2} + o(x)$; then $u \to 0$, and

$$(1 + x)^{1/x} = e^{1 + u} = e\,e^{u} \;\Longrightarrow\; (1 + x)^{1/x} - e = e\left(e^{u} - 1\right)$$

Step 4. Apply the outer function to a small quantity. Since $e^{u} - 1 \sim u$,

$$\lim_{x \to 0}\frac{e\left(-\frac{x}{2} + o(x)\right)}{x} = -\frac{e}{2} \approx -1.3591$$
The main trap

If we retain only the first term $\ln(1 + x) \approx x$, the exponent becomes exactly 1, the expression becomes exactly $e$, and we obtain $\frac{e - e}{x} = \frac00$: the problem seems to disappear. Here the second term of the expansion contains the entire answer.

The two key steps have already been practiced separately. “The exponent is obtained by dividing by $x$, so the logarithm must be expanded one order further” is the lesson's model problem; “the exponent tends to a finite number, so factor out $e$ and reduce the rest to $e^{u} - 1$” is bridge problem b0604. Here the two ideas are simply combined.

Numerical check: at $x = 0.001$, the fraction equals $-1.3579$ and approaches $-1.3591$.

Here $\lfloor t \rfloor$ is the greatest integer not exceeding $t$. Round your answer to four decimal places.

Hint
RU

Разбирай $x \to 0^{+}$ и $x \to 0^{-}$ отдельно и перебери случаи по знаку $a + 2$, как в b0603.

EN

The floor function has a discontinuity near zero. Consider $x \to 0^{+}$ and $x \to 0^{-}$ separately, and examine the cases determined by the sign of $a + 2$, as in b0603. Remember to check $a = 0$ separately.

Solution
RU

При $x \to 0$ имеем $|ax| \to 0$, причём $|ax| \ge 0$.

Если $t \to 0^{+}$, то $\lfloor t \rfloor = 0$; если $t \to 0^{-}$, то $\lfloor t \rfloor = -1$.

Случай 1: $a + 2 > 0$ и $a \ne 0$. При $x \to 0^{+}$ имеем $t \to 0^{+}$, значит $\lfloor t \rfloor = 0$ и $\arcsin 0 = 0$. При $x \to 0^{-}$ имеем $t \to 0^{-}$, значит $\lfloor t \rfloor = -1$ и $\arcsin(-1) = -\frac{\pi}{2}$.

Случай 2: $a + 2 < 0$. Симметрично: теперь при $x \to 0^{+}$ имеем $t \to 0^{-}$ и наоборот.

Случай 3: $a = 0$. Тогда $a + 2 = 2 > 0$, числитель слева равен $-\frac{\pi}{2}$, а знаменатель равен $x \to 0^{-}$.

Случай 4: $a + 2 = 0$, то есть $a = -2$.

$$\lim_{x \to 0}\left(0 - 1\right) = -1$$

Ответ: $a = -2$.

EN

Begin with the second term. As $x \to 0$, we have $|ax| \to 0$, with $|ax| \ge 0$. Thus, for all sufficiently small $|x|$, we have $0 \le |ax| < 1$, which gives $\lfloor |ax| \rfloor = 0$ and $\cos 0 = 1$. This term equals 1 and causes no difficulty for any $a$.

The first term contains the entire issue. The key observation is the same as in bridge problem b0603: near zero, the floor function behaves differently on the two sides. If $t \to 0^{+}$, then $\lfloor t \rfloor = 0$; if $t \to 0^{-}$, then $\lfloor t \rfloor = -1$.

Set $t = (a + 2)x$ and consider the possible cases.

Case 1: $a + 2 > 0$ and $a \ne 0$. As $x \to 0^{+}$, we have $t \to 0^{+}$, so $\lfloor t \rfloor = 0$ and $\arcsin 0 = 0$. As $x \to 0^{-}$, we have $t \to 0^{-}$, so $\lfloor t \rfloor = -1$ and $\arcsin(-1) = -\frac{\pi}{2}$. The denominator tends to $a \ne 0$, so the one-sided limits are $0$ and $-\frac{\pi}{2a}$. They differ, and the limit does not exist.

Case 2: $a + 2 < 0$. The argument is symmetric: now as $x \to 0^{+}$, we have $t \to 0^{-}$, and conversely. The numerator still jumps between $0$ and $-\frac{\pi}{2}$, so the limit does not exist.

Case 3: $a = 0$. Then $a + 2 = 2 > 0$. On the left, the numerator equals $-\frac{\pi}{2}$, while the denominator is $x \to 0^{-}$. The fraction tends to $+\infty$, so a finite limit certainly does not exist.

Case 4: $a + 2 = 0$, that is, $a = -2$. Then $t = (a + 2)x = 0$ identically for every $x$, not merely in the limit. Hence $\lfloor t \rfloor = 0$ and $\arcsin 0 = 0$; the numerator is identically zero and there is no jump. The denominator tends to $a = -2 \ne 0$, so the first term equals $\frac{0}{-2} = 0$, and the full limit exists:

$$\lim_{x \to 0}\left(0 - 1\right) = -1$$

Answer: $a = -2$.

What to take away

The floor function is discontinuous; it is not a smooth function. Whenever you see $\lfloor \cdot \rfloor$ near zero, begin by writing down the two one-sided limits—they will almost certainly differ. With this reflex, the problem takes five minutes; without it, the problem is unlikely to yield at all.

The second reason this problem comes last is the way the case $a = -2$ is rescued. The expression inside the floor function becomes identically zero, rather than merely tending to zero; these are fundamentally different situations. Bridge problem b0603 trained exactly this step. Here, it is supplemented by a second term and a separate check of the denominator when $a = 0$.

Вычислите $\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0}\frac{\sin 3x - 3x\cos x}{x^{3}}$.

Hint

EN

Expand both terms through the cubic term. Remember that $3x\cos x$ is a series multiplied by a factor.

Solution
RU

$$\sin 3x = 3x - \frac{(3x)^{3}}{6} + o(x^{4}) = 3x - \frac{9x^{3}}{2} + o(x^{4})$$

$$3x\cos x = 3x\left(1 - \frac{x^{2}}{2} + o(x^{3})\right) = 3x - \frac{3x^{3}}{2} + o(x^{4})$$

$$\sin 3x - 3x\cos x = -\frac{9x^{3}}{2} + \frac{3x^{3}}{2} + o(x^{4}) = -3x^{3} + o(x^{4})$$$$\lim_{x \to 0}\frac{-3x^{3} + o(x^{4})}{x^{3}} = -3$$

EN

The denominator is of order $x^{3}$, so the numerator must be known through order $x^{3}$.

The first term has a composite argument. Substitute the entire expression $3x$ into the formula (as in warm-up problem w0602):

$$\sin 3x = 3x - \frac{(3x)^{3}}{6} + o(x^{4}) = 3x - \frac{9x^{3}}{2} + o(x^{4})$$

The second term is a series multiplied by a factor. Since the factor outside the parentheses is $3x$, an expansion through $x^{2}$ inside the parentheses is sufficient: the factor supplies the additional power.

$$3x\cos x = 3x\left(1 - \frac{x^{2}}{2} + o(x^{3})\right) = 3x - \frac{3x^{3}}{2} + o(x^{4})$$

Take the difference. The linear terms cancel completely:

$$\sin 3x - 3x\cos x = -\frac{9x^{3}}{2} + \frac{3x^{3}}{2} + o(x^{4}) = -3x^{3} + o(x^{4})$$$$\lim_{x \to 0}\frac{-3x^{3} + o(x^{4})}{x^{3}} = -3$$
A common error

Substituting $\sin 3x \approx 3x$ and $\cos x \approx 1$ gives $\frac{3x - 3x}{x^{3}} = 0$, tempting one to report zero. The linear terms cancel completely, so the entire answer lies in the cubic terms, and the expansions must include them. The same idea was practiced in bridge problem b0605.

Numerical check: at $x = 0.05$, the fraction equals $-2.9953$, converging to $-3$.

EN

Replace both functions by equivalent expressions: this is a quotient, not a difference.

Solution
RU

При $x \to 0$ имеем $\sin 5x \sim 5x$ и $\ln(1 + 3x) \sim 3x$:

$$\lim_{x \to 0}\frac{5x}{3x} = \frac53 \approx 1.6667$$

EN

As $x \to 0$, we have $\sin 5x \sim 5x$ and $\ln(1 + 3x) \sim 3x$:

$$\lim_{x \to 0}\frac{5x}{3x} = \frac53 \approx 1.6667$$

Let us use the expansion-depth rule to verify that one term is enough. The numerator is $5x + o(x^{2})$, and the denominator is $3x + o(x^{2})$. Both are of order $x$, and their leading coefficients do not cancel, so the answer is already determined and no further terms are needed.

When one term is enough

The rule is simple: if the numerator does not become zero after the leading terms are substituted, you are done. A zero numerator is the only reason to expand further.

EN

Today is August 28. The online-test window opened yesterday, and the attempt is scheduled for September 4 — seven days from now, exactly half the program is behind you. Mock No. 1 is here not to grade you, but to expose behavioral gaps while there is still time to repair them.

The online-round rules make process at least as important as mathematics: eight problems, four hours, one attempt, and only a number is accepted, with no justification. Three consequences follow, and you will practice each by hand today. First, a wrong answer and a blank field are worth the same — zero — so there should be no blank fields at all. Second, no one reads a derivation, so a Python enumeration is as valid as an analytical solution. Third, one problem that traps you costs not only its own points, but the points from two other problems you never reached.

The mock is compressed to 150 minutes for eight problems instead of 240. This is not strictness for its own sake: you need to experience the shortage now, in a safe setting. If eight problems fit into two and a half hours, then the four hours on September 4 will feel like a reserve rather than a limit — and that feeling is worth more than one extra topic.

The second half of the day matters more than the mock itself. One carefully analyzed error is worth three newly solved problems, because a problem closes one case, while an analyzed error closes an entire class.

  • метка A (вижу решение целиком), B (вижу тему и первый ход), C (не вижу даже темы);
  • оценка в минутах — сколько, по-твоему, займёт;

Python —

What is being measured today

For six days you built technique in a calm setting: the topic was named, the method was known, and time was unlimited. Today we check whether that technique survives on paper under a timer. This is a separate skill; it does not appear by itself.

Four observable things are measured, and none is mathematics:

  1. Labeling all eight problems in the first ten minutes: label, estimate, topic word.
  2. Respecting the 12-minute cutoff and the 25-minute ceiling — no endless attempts.
  3. Three final passes, strictly in order: blank fields, format, plausibility.
  4. Eight filled fields by the end of the allotted time.

The number of problems solved is a by-product. It will be larger the more strictly these four are followed.

The first ten minutes: label, do not calculate

The rule is simple and strict: do not perform a single calculation in the first ten minutes. Not on paper, not aloud. Write three things for each of the eight problems:

  • Label A (I can see the whole solution), B (I see the topic and first move), or C (I cannot even see the topic);
  • Estimate in minutes — how long you expect the problem to take;
  • Topic word — one word naming what the problem is about.

This is the same for Mock 1, Mock 2, and the exam: you will write these same three things on September 3 for Mock No. 2 and on September 4 for the attempt.

Label

LabelWhen to use itWhat it means
AI can see the whole solutionOnly arithmetic remains
BI see the topic and first moveThere is a risk of getting stuck
CI cannot even see the topicIt goes last or not at all

The label is about you, not objective difficulty. A problem the whole world considers easy but you cannot see is C, and there is no shame in that. Labeling is for planning, not self-evaluation: lie to yourself and you break the plan.

Estimate in minutes

Next to the label, write the number of minutes in which you expect to close the problem. The estimate will almost certainly be too low, and that is fine: its job is not to predict time, but to set the order.

In the evening, the most useful number of the day is calculated from these same estimates. Optimism factor = actual time divided by the estimate from the labeling. It is calculated for problems brought to an answer. We collect it for the first time today, refine it on September 3 in Mock No. 2, and multiply every time estimate by it on September 4. That is why estimates are always recorded — today, in Mock No. 2, and in the attempt itself.

Topic word

One word: “counting,” “complement,” “Bayes,” “indicator,” “derivative,” “limit.” This is exactly the recognition skill that mixed practice exists for. If the word does not come, the label is automatically C, however familiar the problem looks.

Write the trap while reading

Anything that catches your eye — “exactly” versus “at least,” a ban on zero in the first digit, “distinct” versus “identical,” the domain $x > 0$, the word “independent” — goes in the margin at once. An hour later, when you reach the problem, your eyes will be tired and you will not notice it a second time. This is how problems you “know how to solve” are lost.

The 150-minute layout

TimeWhat you doRule
0:00–0:10Read all eightNo calculations. Label, estimate, topic word
0:10–0:45All A problemsIn increasing estimate order, starting with the shortest. Check answer format on the first one
0:45–1:45All B problemsAttempt cutoff — 12 minutes; problem ceiling — 25 minutes total
1:30BreakOne minute: stand up, look away from the screen, sit down
1:45–2:10C and returnsPython, enumeration, a sensible estimate instead of a blank
2:10–2:30Close the sheetThree passes strictly in order: blank fields, format, plausibility

This is a compressed version of the four-hour schedule from the “Reference guide”: its same five phases take 10, 80, 90, 40, and 20 minutes. Only the three working phases are compressed: 80, 90, and 40 minutes for A, B, and “C and returns” become 35, 60, and 25. None of the rule numbers scales: ten minutes for labeling at the beginning, 12 minutes per attempt, 25 minutes per problem, and twenty minutes for closing the sheet at the end are exactly the same today as on September 4. That is why there can be no proportional relationship between the mock schedule and the exam schedule — the edges are fixed, only the middle shrinks, and those edges transfer to September 4 without relearning.

Take problems in increasing estimate order within each label: all A first, starting with the shortest, then B, then C. Problem numbers mean nothing. Authors do not sort problems by difficulty, and the first problem on the sheet is just as likely to be the hardest. Start with the shortest A: it is where you check how the system accepts the answer format; doing that on the most expensive problem would be wasteful.

There are two scheduled breaks, by the clock rather than by how you feel: at 1:30, one minute (stand up, look away from the screen, sit down), and at 2:30, three minutes and water. In the compressed mock only the first fits inside; 2:30 is the finish. Stand up at 1:30 even if you are mid-calculation.

The 12-minute attempt cutoff

If the problem has not moved after 12 minutes in one attempt, mark it “return,” write in one line where you stopped, and leave. The problem’s original label does not change. If no expression has appeared where only numbers remain to be substituted, the attempt is over. Recording where you stopped is mandatory: without that line, the return starts from zero and consumes another twelve minutes.

The label does not change on purpose: C is the initial label from the scan, not a punishment for a failed attempt. A problem labeled B in the morning stays B even if the first attempt fails.

The filter after the first attempt

If after the first attempt you cannot say in one sentence exactly what is missing, move the problem to the end of the queue and take it last. Filtering changes the queue but does not close the problem: only the 25-minute ceiling closes it.

There is exactly one check, and it is verbal: say aloud what was missing. “I cannot see how to compute the numerator,” “I do not know how to evaluate this integral,” “I do not remember the sector-area formula” — if you can say the sentence, the problem stays in its place in the queue. If all you can say is “it is not working,” move it to the end: right now it costs more than any remaining problem, and an hour later, after three problems are closed, it may solve itself.

The 25-minute total ceiling

After 25 minutes total across all attempts, write a sensible estimate in the field and close the problem for good. There is no return. No “five more minutes”: 25 is an exit, not a warning.

Twenty-five minutes is one sixth of the mock for eight problems: only two other problems cost more, and you will not even see them if this one consumes you.

A sign of getting stuck

The thought “it is about to work,” arriving for the second time in a row on the same problem, is not evidence that you are close; it is physiology: your brain does not want to give up the time already invested. Economists call this the sunk-cost fallacy, and it grows stronger the more you have spent. The moment you catch it a second time, stand up, take three breaths, and take the shortest remaining problem by estimate.

Return

A return is made only after a complete pass through all eight problems. Not “when an idea appears” and not “I am almost remembering it.” The reason is simple: until you complete the pass, you do not know whether a cheaper problem is waiting among the rest.

A return starts not with solving but with rereading the entire statement aloud, from zero. Half of returns end with the first sentence: you discover that you misread the statement, and no mathematics needed fixing.

Plausibility check

Spend twenty seconds on the answer; this catches about half of mistakes. There are five kinds of checks, and at least one applies almost always.

  1. Range. A probability is in $[0,1]$, a count is a nonnegative integer, an average lies within the range of values, and $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$.
  2. Direction. An observation must move the probability in the indicated direction. The posterior probability of a hypothesis supported by the observation cannot be lower than its prior probability.
  3. Upper and lower bounds. For counting problems, compute an obviously larger case by removing a restriction and an obviously smaller case by tightening it. The answer must lie strictly between them; both bounds can be found mentally in half a minute.
  4. Order of magnitude. Estimate the answer roughly in one line before writing a careful formula. A difference by a factor of several signals a lost multiplier, not a reason to rewrite the solution.
  5. Numerical substitution. For a limit, substitute $x = 0.01$ and compare. For an extremum, evaluate the function at two neighboring points and check that the proposed value is smaller than both. For a derivative, compare with a difference quotient. Thirty seconds in Python.
Answer format

Four digits after the decimal point, a period as separator, no spaces or units. Integers have no decimal part. Add zeros: the answer $-0.37$ is entered as -0.3700. Check the format on the first problem, not the eighth.

Closing the sheet: three passes in strict order

The last 20 minutes are reserved for this — both on September 4 and today. This is a fixed rule, and compressing the mock does not scale it with the working phases: today solving stops at 2:10; on September 4 it stops at 3:40. The order is the same and is never rearranged:

  1. Blank fields. Put a sensible estimate in every blank field. A blank is worth exactly as much as a wrong answer, and there is no penalty for a wrong one.
  2. Format all eight. Four digits after the decimal point, a period as separator, no spaces or units.
  3. Plausibility. Probability in $[0,1]$, count a nonnegative integer, average within the range of values, $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$, and the right order of magnitude.

Every number written in Step 1 must go through Steps 2 and 3 along with all the others. An estimate put in a blank field and failing the format check is still a blank, just one that cost a minute.

A sensible estimate is not invented from thin air: if a probability problem seems to describe a rare event rather than a common one, $0.1$ conveys more than a blank. If it is a counting problem and you know an upper bound, write half that bound.

Python is a legal tool

Justification is not accepted in the online round, so a numerical answer is as valid as an analytical one. Python saves the most time in three cases:

  • Complete enumeration. The outcome space is finite and small: enumerate it and count the fraction. Four lines, no risk of a combinatorics mistake.
  • Monte Carlo. The space is large but can be simulated. A million trials gives about three correct digits; with four required, it checks an analytical answer rather than replacing it.
  • Numerical checking. A limit, derivative, or minimum can be checked by substitution in half a minute, even after a formula has produced the answer.

Break

The twenty minutes between the mock and the review are not rest; they are part of the method.

Why review after a break

Right after the mock, you remember the path of your reasoning and unconsciously defend it: when rereading your solution, you see not what is written but what you meant. After twenty minutes, the link between the text and your intention breaks, and you look at your solution as if it were someone else’s. The holes become visible.

Cold review: three diagnoses

Every unfinished or incorrect problem gets exactly one written diagnosis. The labels are the same today, on Mock No. 2, and on September 4:

DiagnosisWhat it meansThe remedy
failed to recognize the topicYou did not understand what the problem was aboutTriggers: what detail in the statement should have given it away
did not know the methodYou recognized the topic but did not know the techniqueTheory and a flashcard: write the method separately
execution broke downYou knew the method but lost the arithmetic, sign, bound, or formatAttention to the specific type of mistake

The third diagnosis is the most valuable and the most uncomfortable: you want to write “I was careless,” but that is an excuse, not a diagnosis. Name the exact location: arithmetic on the third line, a missed boundary case, a misread condition, or the wrong one of two similar formulas. Only such a record changes behavior.

Errors of the first type are fixed by practice, the second by theory, and the third only by your own list, which you reread before every mock. Only the third type goes in the log.

What to do with the number solved

There is no scale saying “this many out of eight means that” and there will not be one: the official passing score has not been announced, and the number solved on a compressed mock is comparable neither to the exam nor even to Mock No. 2. Today measures the protocol, not the result, and all four measurements are about behavior.

Do not be upset if the number is small today. Mock No. 1 is deliberately on Day 7: half the program is still ahead, and the mock’s job is to show gaps, not successes. A poor result today costs far less than a poor result on September 4.

The first ten minutes: eight problems become a plan

RU

Read this block in the evening

All eight mock problems are named below. This review belongs in the 3:00–3:50 slot, after your own labels are on the table and can be compared with the reference. There is nothing useful here before the mock.

Episode. 0:00. Eight problems are open, the timer is running, and the pen is in your hand. You cannot calculate anything. After ten minutes, the margins should contain a table of eight rows and, below it, a work order.

Step 1. Set up the table before reading the first problem. Five columns: number, topic word, label, estimate in minutes, and trap. The labeling itself remains exactly three things — label, estimate, topic word; the fifth column does not count as labeling at all. It is the place where a detail noticed while reading goes, because there is nowhere else to put it. Draw the table in advance so that you do not need to decide what to record while reading: a blank cell demands to be filled.

Step 2. One pass, one minute per problem. Read to the end without going back. Eight minutes — eight rows:

ProblemTopic wordLabelEstimateMargin note
k101multiplication ruleA3zero forbidden only in the first digit, allowed afterward
k102outcome fractionB5denominator is obvious, numerator cannot be handled by hand — enumerate
k103BayesA3priors are equal, so they will cancel
k104indicatorB12fork: indicator on the person or on the object being counted
k105quotient derivativeA2shortest one; use it to check the answer format
k106limit, asymptotics sheetA3subtract the linear part — a quadratic term will be needed
k107extremumA4domain $x > 0$; no justification of the minimum is required
k108complementA3“at least one” — count the complementary event

Step 3. Check that the labeling is honest. Having no C labels is a reason to be cautious, not happy: one of the labels is probably too high. Look at the shortest estimates and ask whether you really see the entire solution, rather than only the topic and first move. Here suspicion falls on k102: the topic and first move are obvious, but how to count the numerator is the question, so it is B despite the small estimate.

Step 4. Add the estimates and look at the total. Six A problems give 18 minutes, and two B problems add 17, for 35 total against the available 120 — the time left for solving after subtracting ten minutes for labeling and twenty for closing the sheet from the 150. This will not happen: actual time will be two or three times longer. The point of the total is not prediction but that the scary “eight problems in two and a half hours” stops being scary after labeling: work for accuracy, not speed. The total alone gives no factor. The optimism factor is actual time divided by the estimate from labeling, and it is calculated for problems brought to an answer: k105, with an estimate of 2 and an actual 5 minutes, gives 2.5; k104, which remained unanswered, is not counted at all.

Step 5. Set the order. In increasing estimate order within each label: all A, starting with the shortest, then B, then C. Problem numbers mean nothing: k105 — k101 — k103 — k106 — k108 — k107 — k102 — k104. Notice that the numbers are completely mixed: position on the sheet has nothing to do with difficulty.

Step 6. Write the plan in the margin and start. Write the order in a corner of the sheet and do not revisit it until the first pass is over. A problem that turns out to be completely different from what it looked like while reading gets a new estimate and is reinserted in the queue according to that estimate. The label does not change: it is the initial labeling, not an evaluation of the result, and C is not a punishment for a failed attempt.

Algorithm
  1. Draw a five-column table before reading the first statement: number, topic, label, estimate, trap.
  2. One minute per problem, eight minutes total. Labeling contains exactly three things: label, estimate in minutes, and topic word. No calculations at all.
  3. Label: see the whole solution — A; see the topic and first move — B; cannot even see the topic — C.
  4. Write any trap noticed while reading immediately in the margin, in the fifth column, not in the labeling: your eyes will skip it the second time.
  5. Use the last two minutes for the order: increasing estimate within each label, all A first from the shortest, then B, then C.

The mock problems are named here as well

This block belongs in the 3:00–3:50 slot and later, after the review. Before the mock it is useless and harmful.

After the review comes repair, not new theory. Take the two most expensive mistakes — not all eight problems, exactly two — and solve three similar problems from the banks of previous days for each. Repairing the mistake while it is fresh works much better than “I’ll review it on the weekend”: you still remember exactly how you went wrong.

Mock problemWhat it testedWhere to find similar problems
k101multiplication rule with a restriction on the first stepw0102, b0101, b0102
k102outcome model and fractionw0201, b0202, b0206
k103reversing the condition with Bayes’ formulab0301, b0304, y0302
k104placing the indicator on the right objectb0406, b0407, y0402
k105quotient derivative at a pointb0501, b0502, b0503
k106expansion depth on the asymptotics sheetb0602, b0605, y0604
k107an extremum carried through to its valuew0501, b0503, y0501
k108counting through the complementw0204, b0204, y0201

The two-problem limit matters. Repairing all eight does not fit in fifty minutes, and trying to force it in produces eight superficial passes instead of two real ones.

If time remains after repair, use the flashcard trainer. Many cards have accumulated today: the intervals from the first days have aligned, and reviewing Day 1 on Day 7 is the most profitable point.

What not to do today

There are no new topics. Do not review solutions to problems you did not attempt. Do not add an evening “catch-up” on topics that sounded weak today: they are already ahead in the program and will be covered on schedule. Today repairs the process, not the content.

Eight problems, 2 hours 30 minutes. The time is intentionally compressed: experience the shortage now, not on September 4.

In the first ten minutes, all eight problems received the three things — A/B/C label, estimate in minutes, and topic word — and not one calculation was made, on paper or aloud
Problems were taken in increasing estimate order within each label: all A first from the shortest, then B, then C; the order was written in the margin before starting and differed from the actual order only when the rules themselves moved a problem — filtering sent it to the end rather than closing it, and a problem that turned out unlike its first impression was reinserted according to its new estimate
No attempt lasted longer than 12 minutes while a problem was stuck, no problem consumed more than 25 minutes total, and you did not return to any problem before completing a pass through all eight; one reaching the ceiling was closed permanently, with no return
Solving stopped at 2:10, and the final 20 minutes went to three passes in strict order: blank fields, format for all eight, plausibility; at 2:30 no blank fields remained
The review began 20 minutes after the mock, in writing, and each unfinished or incorrect problem has exactly one of the three diagnoses in the log: failed to recognize the topic, did not know the method, execution broke down
The log contains exactly three takeaways, each in the form “I saw X — I do Y,” plus the optimism factor: actual time divided by the estimate from labeling, calculated for problems brought to an answer
The 1:30 break was taken by the clock, not by how you felt: stand up, look away from the screen, sit down — even in the middle of a derivation; a second break does not fit in the compressed mock, so 2:30 is the finish
RU

EN

Three takeaways. The format is strict: “In problem N, I did X because Y. Next time, when I see Z, I will do W.” Vague wording such as “I was careless” does not count — it changes no action and is therefore useless.

On a separate line, write the optimism factor = actual time divided by the estimate from labeling. It is calculated for problems brought to an answer. Unfinished problems are not counted: they have no actual solving time, only the time you invested in them. This number is refined on September 3 in Mock No. 2, and on September 4 every exam time estimate is multiplied by it.

And in one line, record how many labels were wrong. A problem labeled A that consumed twenty minutes is a labeling error, not a solving error, and needs separate treatment from mathematics. If there are more than two, reread the section on labels before starting tomorrow: it is the cheapest source of lost points of all.
