RU

EN

By the end of the day, you can calculate the angle between any two vectors in any dimension, introduce coordinates when all you are given is a figure, decompose a vector into a component along a direction and a perpendicular component, and find the distance to a line. Check yourself with the four final problems below; the third one is timed.

EN

Yesterday closed the “Analysis” block, and its final day’s mini-test was an angle — between the curves $y = x^2$ and $x = y^2$. We calculated it from tangent slopes and the tangent-difference formula, a technique that lives only in the plane. Today an angle formula appears that does not care whether there are two dimensions or a thousand. It must reproduce the planar case, and that is the first check worth doing by hand.

The idea of the closest simple approximation returns from Day 5. A tangent line is the closest line to a curve; a projection is the closest point on a line to a given point. In both cases, the excess is discarded, and in both cases the discarded remainder is perpendicular to what remains. Least squares grows from this pair later on.

Day 2 contributes a measure in place of counting. In the hardest problem of the day there are infinitely many outcomes, and probability is still a fraction — only the measure is neither length nor area, but the angular size of an arc.

RU

EN

Integrate by parts twice. The original integral will reappear, giving an equation for it.

Solution
RU

Обозначим $I = \int_0^{+\infty} e^{-x}\sin x\,dx$ и проинтегрируем по частям дважды.

Первый раз ($u = \sin x$, $dv = e^{-x}dx$, $v = -e^{-x}$):

$$I = -e^{-x}\sin x\bigg|_0^{+\infty} + \int_0^{+\infty} e^{-x}\cos x\,dx = 0 + \int_0^{+\infty} e^{-x}\cos x\,dx$$

Второй раз ($u = \cos x$):

$$\int_0^{+\infty} e^{-x}\cos x\,dx = -e^{-x}\cos x\bigg|_0^{+\infty} - \int_0^{+\infty} e^{-x}\sin x\,dx = 1 - I$$

$$I = 1 - I \;\Longrightarrow\; I = \frac12 = 0.5$$

$$\int_0^{+\infty}e^{-ax}\sin bx\,dx = \frac{b}{a^2 + b^2}$$

Проверь при $a = b = 1$: $\frac{1}{2}$.

Дифференцирование даёт $\left(-\frac{e^{-x}(\sin x + \cos x)}{2}\right)' = e^{-x}\sin x$.

EN

Let $I = \int_0^{+\infty} e^{-x}\sin x\,dx$ and integrate by parts twice.

First ($u = \sin x$, $dv = e^{-x}dx$, $v = -e^{-x}$):

$$I = -e^{-x}\sin x\bigg|_0^{+\infty} + \int_0^{+\infty} e^{-x}\cos x\,dx = 0 + \int_0^{+\infty} e^{-x}\cos x\,dx$$

Second ($u = \cos x$):

$$\int_0^{+\infty} e^{-x}\cos x\,dx = -e^{-x}\cos x\bigg|_0^{+\infty} - \int_0^{+\infty} e^{-x}\sin x\,dx = 1 - I$$

Thus we obtain the equation

$$I = 1 - I \;\Longrightarrow\; I = \frac12 = 0.5$$
The “equation for an integral” technique

This method works for any product of an exponential with a sine or cosine. Integrating by parts twice returns the original integral, turning the calculation into an algebraic equation.

The general formula is also worth remembering:

$$\int_0^{+\infty}e^{-ax}\sin bx\,dx = \frac{b}{a^2 + b^2}$$

For $a = b = 1$, it gives $\frac{1}{2}$. Check it also in the bridge problem b0805, where $a = 2$: $\frac15$.

Alternative method: recognize an antiderivative

Differentiation gives $\left(-\frac{e^{-x}(\sin x + \cos x)}{2}\right)' = e^{-x}\sin x$. Thus the antiderivative could have been recognized immediately, yielding $0 - \left(-\frac{1 \cdot (0 + 1)}{2}\right) = \frac12$ without integration by parts. Two independent routes to the same value provide the strongest available check.

RU$$\frac{1}{x^2 + x} = \frac{1}{x(x+1)} = \frac1x - \frac{1}{x+1}$$$$\int_1^{T}\left(\frac1x - \frac{1}{x+1}\right)dx = \ln\frac{x}{x+1}\bigg|_1^{T} = \ln\frac{T}{T+1} - \ln\frac12$$

$$\int_1^{+\infty}\frac{dx}{x^2+x} = -\ln\frac12 = \ln 2 \approx 0.6931$$

Там ответ был $\frac{\ln 3}{2}$, здесь $\ln 2$ — общая формула $\int_1^{+\infty}\frac{dx}{x(x+a)} = \frac{\ln(1+a)}{a}$. Проверь на $a = 1$ и $a = 2$.

EN$$\frac{1}{x^2 + x} = \frac{1}{x(x+1)} = \frac1x - \frac{1}{x+1}$$$$\int_1^{T}\left(\frac1x - \frac{1}{x+1}\right)dx = \ln\frac{x}{x+1}\bigg|_1^{T} = \ln\frac{T}{T+1} - \ln\frac12$$

As $T \to \infty$, the first term tends to $\ln 1 = 0$:

$$\int_1^{+\infty}\frac{dx}{x^2+x} = -\ln\frac12 = \ln 2 \approx 0.6931$$
A subtle point that often costs the problem

Taken separately, $\int_1^{+\infty}\frac{dx}{x}$ and $\int_1^{+\infty}\frac{dx}{x+1}$ both diverge: each is infinite. Yet their difference converges.

Therefore, combine the logarithms into one before taking the limit. If infinity is substituted into each logarithm separately, the result is $\infty - \infty$, and the calculation cannot proceed.

Comparison with the bridge problem

This follows the same pattern as problem b0806, except that the shift in the denominator is one rather than two. The answer there was $\frac{\ln 3}{2}$, while here it is $\ln 2$. Both are instances of the formula $\int_1^{+\infty}\frac{dx}{x(x+a)} = \frac{\ln(1+a)}{a}$. Verify it for $a = 1$ and $a = 2$.

At what acute angle (in radians) do the curves $y = x^{2}$ and $x = y^{2}$ intersect at their upper-right point of intersection? Round your answer to four decimal places.

Hint
RU

EN

The angle between two curves is the angle between their tangents at the point of intersection. Find the two slopes and use the formula for the tangent of the angle between two lines.

Solution
RU

Подставляем $y = x^2$ во второе уравнение: $x = (x^2)^2 = x^4$, откуда $x \in \{0, 1\}$.

$$\tan\varphi = \left|\frac{k_1 - k_2}{1 + k_1k_2}\right| = \left|\frac{2 - \frac12}{1 + 1}\right| = \frac{3}{4}$$$$\varphi = \arctan\frac34 \approx 0.6435$$

EN

Step 1. Find the point of intersection. Substitute $y = x^2$ into the second equation: $x = (x^2)^2 = x^4$, so $x \in \{0, 1\}$. The upper-right point is $(1, 1)$.

Step 2. Find the slopes of the tangents. For $y = x^2$, we have $y' = 2x$, so $k_1 = 2$. For $x = y^2$, solve for $y$. The point $(1,1)$ lies on the upper branch, so we take $y = \sqrt x$, not $y = -\sqrt x$; hence $y' = \frac{1}{2\sqrt x}$ and $k_2 = \frac12$.

Step 3. Find the angle between the lines.

$$\tan\varphi = \left|\frac{k_1 - k_2}{1 + k_1k_2}\right| = \left|\frac{2 - \frac12}{1 + 1}\right| = \frac{3}{4}$$$$\varphi = \arctan\frac34 \approx 0.6435$$
Symmetry check

The curves are symmetric about the line $y = x$, so the angle between them equals $\arctan 2 - \arctan\frac12 = 1.1071 - 0.4636 = 0.6435$. The values agree.

This check takes twenty seconds and completely eliminates the risk of an error in the tangent formula.

Попробуй отражение $x \to \frac{\pi}{2} - x$.

EN

The exponent $\sqrt2$ looks unnatural, suggesting that the answer does not depend on it. Try the reflection $x \to \frac{\pi}{2} - x$.

Solution
RU

Обозначим интеграл $I$ и отразим отрезок: $a + b - x = \frac{\pi}{2} - x$. Отрезок переходит сам в себя, а $\tan\left(\frac\pi2 - x\right) = \frac{1}{\tan x}$:

$$I = \int_0^{\pi/2}\frac{dx}{1 + \tan^{-\sqrt2}x}$$

$$I = \int_0^{\pi/2}\frac{\tan^{\sqrt2}x\,dx}{\tan^{\sqrt2}x + 1}$$

$$2I = \int_0^{\pi/2}\frac{1 + \tan^{\sqrt2}x}{1 + \tan^{\sqrt2}x}\,dx = \int_0^{\pi/2}dx = \frac{\pi}{2}$$$$I = \frac{\pi}{4} \approx 0.7854$$

EN

Denote the integral by $I$ and reflect the interval: $a + b - x = \frac{\pi}{2} - x$. The interval maps onto itself, and $\tan\left(\frac\pi2 - x\right) = \frac{1}{\tan x}$:

$$I = \int_0^{\pi/2}\frac{dx}{1 + \tan^{-\sqrt2}x}$$

Multiply the numerator and denominator by $\tan^{\sqrt2}x$:

$$I = \int_0^{\pi/2}\frac{\tan^{\sqrt2}x\,dx}{\tan^{\sqrt2}x + 1}$$

Now add the two expressions for the same $I$, exactly as in problem b0804:

$$2I = \int_0^{\pi/2}\frac{1 + \tan^{\sqrt2}x}{1 + \tan^{\sqrt2}x}\,dx = \int_0^{\pi/2}dx = \frac{\pi}{2}$$$$I = \frac{\pi}{4} \approx 0.7854$$
How to recognize this type of problem

An unnatural parameter in the statement—$\sqrt2$, $2025$, or “an arbitrary $s$”—almost always signals that the answer is independent of it and that the problem requires a structural argument rather than direct computation. Problem setters use such parameters deliberately as a clue.

This function has an antiderivative because it is continuous, but that antiderivative cannot be expressed in elementary functions, so no standard integration technique will produce a useful formula. Reflecting the interval does not simplify the integrand either; instead, it gives a second expression for the same quantity, and adding the two expressions completes the argument.

Solution
RU$$A_n = \int_0^1 x^{n-1}dx - \int_0^1 x^{n+1}dx = \frac1n - \frac{1}{n+2}$$$$A_1 = 1 - \frac13 = \frac23, \qquad A_2 = \frac12 - \frac14 = \frac14$$$$A_1 + A_2 = \frac23 + \frac14 = \frac{8 + 3}{12} = \frac{11}{12} \approx 0.9167$$

EN$$A_n = \int_0^1 x^{n-1}dx - \int_0^1 x^{n+1}dx = \frac1n - \frac{1}{n+2}$$$$A_1 = 1 - \frac13 = \frac23, \qquad A_2 = \frac12 - \frac14 = \frac14$$$$A_1 + A_2 = \frac23 + \frac14 = \frac{8 + 3}{12} = \frac{11}{12} \approx 0.9167$$
The point at which errors occur

The exponent is symbolic, and the antiderivative is $\frac{x^{n}}{n}$, not $\frac{x^{n-1}}{n-1}$. Substitute $n = 1$ into both versions: the correct one gives $A_1 = \frac23$, while the incorrect one involves division by zero. A single numerical substitution checks the symbolic calculation in five seconds. This is precisely the technique practiced in the warm-up w0801 and the bridge problem b0801.

An observation worth making

The general formula $A_n = \frac{2}{n(n+2)}$ decomposes as $\frac{1}{n} - \frac{1}{n+2}$. When such terms are summed, they telescope: neighboring terms cancel, and the entire series $\sum_{n \ge 1} A_n$ reduces to $\frac32$.

Problems of this kind are often presented in stages: first $A_1 + A_2$, then the sum of the entire series.

EN

The topic appears directly in the school’s official materials: the third Practice Problems set starts with a Gram matrix — a table of dot products whose determinant reveals linear dependence. That problem is worked through on Day 10 (y1001), but all its machinery — dot product, length, and angle — is installed today.

The danger is not complexity but two other things. First, almost all errors here are mechanical: mixing up the denominator in a projection, losing the minus sign for the cosine of an obtuse angle, or forgetting a square root. In the online round, where only a number is accepted, such an error costs exactly as much as not knowing the topic. Second, half of the problems arrive without coordinates — as a figure or as a set of lengths and angles — and you must decide what to use in place of the missing numbers.

This is also the one place in the course where mathematics directly meets ML. Cosine similarity of embeddings, which search engines and language models use to compare texts, is literally today’s formula. It is almost certain to come up in an interview.

Три свойства, которыми дальше пользуются не задумываясь: симметрия $\langle x,y\rangle = \langle y,x\rangle$; линейность $\langle ax + bz,\ y\rangle = a\langle x,y\rangle + b\langle z,y\rangle$; положительность $\langle x,x\rangle > 0$ при $x \ne 0$.

$\|(1,2,3)\| = \sqrt{1 + 4 + 9} = \sqrt{14} \approx 3.7417$.

Lasso

Теорема косинусов даёт $\|x-y\|^2 = \|x\|^2 + \|y\|^2 - 2\|x\|\,\|y\|\cos\varphi$, а линейность — $\|x-y\|^2 = \langle x - y,\ x - y\rangle = \|x\|^2 - 2\langle x,y\rangle + \|y\|^2$.

Отсюда $\cos\varphi = \dfrac{\langle x, y\rangle}{\|x\|\,\|y\|}$.

$$\cos\varphi = \frac{1 + 0 + 0}{\sqrt2 \cdot \sqrt2} = \frac12 \;\Longrightarrow\; \varphi = 60°$$

$$\|u + v\|^2 = \langle u+v,\ u+v\rangle = \|u\|^2 + 2\langle u,v\rangle + \|v\|^2$$

$$\|u+v\|^2 = 4 + 9 + 2\cdot 3 = 19 \;\Longrightarrow\; \|u+v\| = \sqrt{19} \approx 4.3589$$

$$\langle p - \lambda v,\ v\rangle = 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; \langle p,v\rangle = \lambda\langle v,v\rangle \;\Longrightarrow\; \lambda = \frac{\langle p,v\rangle}{\langle v,v\rangle}$$
Проекция и ортогональная составляющая$$\proj_v(p) = \frac{\langle p, v\rangle}{\langle v, v\rangle}\,v \qquad \text{— вектор}$$$$\left|\proj_v(p)\right| = \frac{|\langle p, v\rangle|}{\|v\|} \qquad \text{— его длина}$$

$$d = \sqrt{\|p\|^2 - \left(\frac{\langle p,v\rangle}{\|v\|}\right)^2}$$

$$d = \frac{|\langle n, p\rangle - c|}{\|n\|}$$

Зафиксируем вектор $a$ и посмотрим на знак $\langle \psi, a\rangle$ для всевозможных направлений $\psi$.

Два вектора $a$ и $l$ с углом $\theta$ между ними задают две прямые: $\langle\psi,a\rangle = 0$ перпендикулярна $a$, $\langle\psi,l\rangle = 0$ перпендикулярна $l$, поэтому угол между самими прямыми тоже равен $\theta$.

$$\P(\text{знаки разошлись}) = \frac{2\theta}{2\pi} = \frac{\theta}{\pi}, \qquad \P(\text{оба произведения} > 0) = \frac{\pi - \theta}{2\pi}$$

Разность $\psi - \psi_1$ перпендикулярна всей плоскости, а значит и каждому вектору в ней, поэтому $\langle a, \psi\rangle = \langle a, \psi_1\rangle$ и то же для $l$.

  1. $\langle x,y\rangle = \sum x_iy_i$ — число; $\|x\| = \sqrt{\langle x,x\rangle}$.
  2. $\langle x,y\rangle = \|x\|\,\|y\|\cos\varphi$
  3. $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$

Opening: one sum of products

Two vectors in $\mathbb{R}^4$: $x = (2, 1, 0, 1)$ and $y = (1, 3, 1, 0)$. How close are they in direction? You cannot draw them — there are four dimensions — but you can calculate: $2\cdot1 + 1\cdot3 + 0\cdot1 + 1\cdot0 = 5$. This number knows almost everything about the pair: their lengths, the angle between them, the nearest point on one along the other’s direction, and the distance to that direction. The entire day is about it.

Dot product

Dot product$$\langle x, y \rangle = x_1y_1 + x_2y_2 + \cdots + x_ny_n$$

It is also written $x \cdot y$ or $x^{T}y$. The result is a number, not a vector.

Three properties will be used without further thought: symmetry $\langle x,y\rangle = \langle y,x\rangle$; linearity $\langle ax + bz,\ y\rangle = a\langle x,y\rangle + b\langle z,y\rangle$; and positivity $\langle x,x\rangle > 0$ for $x \ne 0$. Linearity lets you expand brackets as in ordinary algebra, and it will be used twice below.

Set $y = x$ in the definition: $\langle x, x\rangle = x_1^2 + \cdots + x_n^2$. In the plane this is exactly the sum of the squared legs of the arrow from the origin. Thus length is the square root of a vector dotted with itself, and the definition works in any dimension.

Euclidean length (norm)$$\|x\| = \sqrt{\langle x, x\rangle} = \sqrt{x_1^2 + \cdots + x_n^2}$$

Example. $\|(1,2,3)\| = \sqrt{1 + 4 + 9} = \sqrt{14} \approx 3.7417$.

Two more norms and a question about Lasso

$\|x\|_1 = |x_1| + \cdots + |x_n|$ has a unit ball that is a rhombus in the plane, with vertices $(\pm1,0)$ and $(0,\pm1)$; $\|x\|_\infty = \max_i |x_i|$ has a square unit ball of side 2. The sharp corners of the $\|\cdot\|_1$ rhombus are why L1 regularization zeros out model coefficients while L2 only shrinks them: the optimum more often lands on a rhombus vertex, where some coordinates are exactly zero. Everywhere else in this day, the norm is Euclidean and its unit ball is a circle.

Angle

Build a triangle from vectors $x$ and $y$: two sides are the vectors themselves, and the third is $x - y$. The law of cosines gives $\|x-y\|^2 = \|x\|^2 + \|y\|^2 - 2\|x\|\,\|y\|\cos\varphi$, while linearity gives $\|x-y\|^2 = \langle x - y,\ x - y\rangle = \|x\|^2 - 2\langle x,y\rangle + \|y\|^2$. The right sides differ in exactly one term; set them equal and cancel the common terms:

The day’s main equality$$\langle x, y\rangle = \|x\|\,\|y\|\cos\varphi$$

Coordinates are on the left, geometry on the right. Read it both ways: left to right gives the angle from coordinates, right to left gives a dot product from lengths and an angle. Half of today’s problems use this second direction.

Therefore $\cos\varphi = \dfrac{\langle x, y\rangle}{\|x\|\,\|y\|}$. In $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $\mathbb{R}^3$ this is a proved theorem; in $\mathbb{R}^{100}$ there is no angle in advance, so the equality becomes the definition of an angle. The right-hand side must then lie in $[-1,1]$, or arccosine would not exist. Exactly this is guaranteed by the inequality that keeps the construction from falling apart.

Cauchy–Schwarz inequality$$|\langle x, y \rangle| \le \|x\|\,\|y\|$$

Equality holds if and only if the vectors are collinear, that is, one is a scalar multiple of the other.

Example. $x = (2,1)$, $y = (1,3)$: their dot product is 5, their lengths are $\sqrt5$ and $\sqrt{10}$, so $\cos\varphi = \frac{5}{\sqrt{50}} = \frac{1}{\sqrt2} \approx 0.7071$ and $\varphi = \frac\pi4$.

Three cases can be read without any calculation:

$\langle x,y\rangle$AngleMeaning
$> 0$acutethe vectors point roughly in the same direction
$= 0$rightorthogonal
$< 0$obtusethey point in opposite directions

Orthogonality is exactly $\langle x,y\rangle = 0$, and it can be checked in one line in any dimension.

Cosine similarity

The similarity of two texts is measured by the cosine of the angle between their embeddings. Why not distance? An embedding’s length often encodes word frequency rather than meaning: a rare and a frequent word with the same meaning can produce vectors of different lengths but the same direction. Cosine ignores length. This is a ready-made answer for an oral interview; say it aloud.

Coordinates instead of a diagram

Half of the exam problems about angles are stated as a figure: a cube, square, or triangle. There are no coordinates, so you choose them yourself. Technique: put a convenient vertex at the origin, align edges with the axes, write the coordinates of the points you need, and then use the cosine formula — no spatial-geometry theorem is required.

Example. Two diagonals of adjacent faces leave one vertex of a unit cube. What angle do they form? Put the vertex at the origin and the edges on the axes. The diagonals have coordinates $f_1 = (1,1,0)$ and $f_2 = (1,0,1)$, so

$$\cos\varphi = \frac{1 + 0 + 0}{\sqrt2 \cdot \sqrt2} = \frac12 \;\Longrightarrow\; \varphi = 60°$$

Solid geometry gives the same answer (the endpoints of the three face diagonals from one vertex are pairwise $\sqrt2$ apart, forming an equilateral triangle), but that insight must be available; the coordinate route requires only care.

When there are no coordinates at all

The reverse also happens: coordinates are not given and there is nowhere to introduce them, but lengths and angles are provided. Read the main equality right to left, and expand the squared norm by linearity:

$$\|u + v\|^2 = \langle u+v,\ u+v\rangle = \|u\|^2 + 2\langle u,v\rangle + \|v\|^2$$

This is literally $(a+b)^2$, with $2\langle u,v\rangle$ playing the role of the doubled product; for three summands, add all three pairwise dot products.

Example. $\|u\| = 2$, $\|v\| = 3$, and the angle is $60°$, so $\langle u,v\rangle = 2\cdot3\cdot\frac12 = 3$, and

$$\|u+v\|^2 = 4 + 9 + 2\cdot 3 = 19 \;\Longrightarrow\; \|u+v\| = \sqrt{19} \approx 4.3589$$

No diagram was needed — only expanding brackets.

The minus sign that gets lost

For an obtuse angle, the cosine is negative, so the term $2\langle u,v\rangle$ is negative. In a difference there are two minus signs: $\|u-v\|^2 = \|u\|^2 - 2\langle u,v\rangle + \|v\|^2$, and with an obtuse angle they cancel, increasing the answer. A free check is the triangle inequality from the “Bridge” block: the result must lie between $\big|\,\|u\|-\|v\|\,\big|$ and $\|u\|+\|v\|$.

Projection and the orthogonal component

Problem. Given a vector $p$ and a direction $v$, which point on the line $\{\lambda v\}$ is closest to the endpoint of $p$? It is the foot of the perpendicular: the point has the form $\lambda v$, and the difference $p - \lambda v$ is orthogonal to $v$, so its dot product with $v$ is zero:

$$\langle p - \lambda v,\ v\rangle = 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; \langle p,v\rangle = \lambda\langle v,v\rangle \;\Longrightarrow\; \lambda = \frac{\langle p,v\rangle}{\langle v,v\rangle}$$
Projection and orthogonal component$$\proj_v(p) = \frac{\langle p, v\rangle}{\langle v, v\rangle}\,v \qquad \text{— vector}$$$$\left|\proj_v(p)\right| = \frac{|\langle p, v\rangle|}{\|v\|} \qquad \text{— its length}$$

The remainder $p_\perp = p - \proj_v(p)$ is called the orthogonal component, and its length is the distance from the endpoint of $p$ to the line.

Two different denominators

This is the most common mechanical error in the topic. In the formula for the vector, the denominator is $\langle v,v\rangle = \|v\|^2$; in the formula for the length, it is simply $\|v\|$. Check dimensions: a vector must contain the factor $v$, while a number must not.

The vector $p$ has split into two perpendicular pieces, so Pythagoras applies: $\|p\|^2 = \left|\proj_v(p)\right|^2 + \|p_\perp\|^2$. This gives a second way to find the distance, without subtracting vectors:

$$d = \sqrt{\|p\|^2 - \left(\frac{\langle p,v\rangle}{\|v\|}\right)^2}$$

Three distances

To a point: $d = \|p - q\|$. To a line through the origin along $v$: the length of the orthogonal component, using either formula above. To a plane $\langle n, x\rangle = c$, where $n$ is a normal vector:

$$d = \frac{|\langle n, p\rangle - c|}{\|n\|}$$

The third formula is the same projection length, this time onto the normal. Example. Distance from point $(1,2,3)$ to the plane $x + 2y + 2z = 6$: the normal is $n = (1,2,2)$ of length 3, so $d = \frac{|1 + 4 + 6 - 6|}{3} = \frac53 \approx 1.6667$.

Angle as a fraction of directions

The final storyline of the day is where linear algebra meets the probability of Day 2. Fix a vector $a$ and consider the sign of $\langle \psi, a\rangle$ over all possible directions $\psi$. Positive means acute, negative obtuse, and zero exactly perpendicular. Thus $\langle\psi,a\rangle > 0$ cuts out a half-plane, and on the circle of directions it leaves exactly half.

Two vectors $a$ and $l$ with angle $\theta$ between them define two lines: $\langle\psi,a\rangle = 0$ is perpendicular to $a$, and $\langle\psi,l\rangle = 0$ is perpendicular to $l$, so the angle between the lines themselves is also $\theta$. Together they cut the circle into four arcs: two of size $\theta$, where the product signs differ, and two of size $\pi - \theta$, where they agree. Check: $2\theta + 2(\pi - \theta) = 2\pi$.

A fraction instead of counting

If direction $\psi$ is uniformly distributed, then

$$\P(\text{signs differ}) = \frac{2\theta}{2\pi} = \frac{\theta}{\pi}, \qquad \P(\text{both products} > 0) = \frac{\pi - \theta}{2\pi}$$

No integrals: probability is an angular fraction, and the answer depends only on $\theta$.

Three facts turn this into a tool for $\mathbb{R}^n$, not only the plane.

First. Let $\mathcal{L}$ be the plane spanned by $a$ and $l$, and let $\psi_1$ be the orthogonal projection of $\psi$ onto it. The difference $\psi - \psi_1$ is perpendicular to the entire plane, and hence to every vector in it, so $\langle a, \psi\rangle = \langle a, \psi_1\rangle$ and likewise for $l$. Projection preserves dot products with vectors in the subspace — so these problems can be reduced to two dimensions without changing the answer.

Second. A standard normal vector (zero mean, identity covariance matrix) projected onto any plane is again a standard normal vector, now two-dimensional, with its direction uniformly distributed around the circle. Thus the angular-fraction rule applies not only to a direction chosen “at random,” but also to a Gaussian vector.

Third. In independent identically distributed trials, the fraction of successes approaches the probability of success in one trial (the law of large numbers). So asking “what does the ratio of points to rounds tend to?” is asking for the probability of one round, and nothing more is needed.

What should stay in your head

  1. $\langle x,y\rangle = \sum x_iy_i$ is a number; $\|x\| = \sqrt{\langle x,x\rangle}$.
  2. $\langle x,y\rangle = \|x\|\,\|y\|\cos\varphi$ can be read both ways.
  3. $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$ always: if it is larger, the arithmetic is wrong, not the theorem.
  4. The sign of the dot product identifies the angle; zero means orthogonality.
  5. A figure with no coordinates: put a vertex at the origin and write two vectors.
  6. Lengths and angles with no coordinates: expand the squared norm.
  7. $\proj_v(p) = \frac{\langle p,v\rangle}{\langle v,v\rangle}v$, while the projection length has $\|v\|$ in the denominator; the remainder $p_\perp$ gives the distance, and Pythagoras connects them.
  8. For a uniform direction, probability is an angular fraction; projection reduces the dimension to two.

$$\langle p,v\rangle = 3 + 6 + 0 = 9, \qquad \langle v,v\rangle = 1 + 4 + 4 = 9, \qquad \|p\|^2 = 9 + 9 + 0 = 18$$

$\lambda = \frac{\langle p,v\rangle}{\langle v,v\rangle} = \frac99 = 1$, поэтому $\proj_v(p) = 1\cdot(1,2,2) = (1,2,2)$.

$p_\perp = p - \proj_v(p) = (3,3,0) - (1,2,2) = (2,1,-2)$.

$$\cos\varphi = \frac{\left|\proj_v(p)\right|}{\|p\|} = \frac{3}{3\sqrt2} = \frac{1}{\sqrt2} \approx 0.7071 \;\Longrightarrow\; \varphi = 45°$$

EN

Problem. Given $p = (3, 3, 0)$ and direction $v = (1, 2, 2)$, find the projection of $p$ onto $v$, the orthogonal component, the distance from the endpoint of $p$ to the line $\{\lambda v\}$, and the angle between $p$ and $v$.

Watch not the numbers but the order of the solution: the same sequence closes b0902, bridge b0907, and mini-test y0903; in s0901, its first step reduces the dimension as well.

Step 1. Decide what is being asked. Is the output a vector, a number, or an angle? That determines which of the two projection formulas to use. Here everything is requested, so calculate in the order in which one result follows from another.

Step 2. Calculate three numbers once. Everything else comes from these, and there will be no more dot products in the problem:

$$\langle p,v\rangle = 3 + 6 + 0 = 9, \qquad \langle v,v\rangle = 1 + 4 + 4 = 9, \qquad \|p\|^2 = 9 + 9 + 0 = 18$$

Step 3. Coefficient first, not the vector. $\lambda = \frac{\langle p,v\rangle}{\langle v,v\rangle} = \frac99 = 1$, so $\proj_v(p) = 1\cdot(1,2,2) = (1,2,2)$. The denominator here is $\langle v,v\rangle$ — the result has to be a vector.

Step 4. Remainder and a mandatory check. $p_\perp = p - \proj_v(p) = (3,3,0) - (1,2,2) = (2,1,-2)$. Check orthogonality right now: $\langle (2,1,-2),\ (1,2,2)\rangle = 2 + 2 - 4 = 0$. Zero means the decomposition is correct. If it were not zero, do not continue.

Step 5. Distance and a second check. The distance is the length of the remainder: $\|p_\perp\| = \sqrt{4 + 1 + 4} = 3$. Check with Pythagoras: the projection has length $\|(1,2,2)\| = 3$, and $3^2 + 3^2 = 18 = \|p\|^2$. It matches.

Step 6. The angle from what you already computed. Do not recalculate the cosine from the definition: it is the projection length divided by the vector’s own length. Take the sign from $\langle p,v\rangle$: it is positive here, so the angle is acute and the absolute value can be removed.

$$\cos\varphi = \frac{\left|\proj_v(p)\right|}{\|p\|} = \frac{3}{3\sqrt2} = \frac{1}{\sqrt2} \approx 0.7071 \;\Longrightarrow\; \varphi = 45°$$

The direct formula gives the same answer: $\frac{\langle p,v\rangle}{\|p\|\,\|v\|} = \frac{9}{3\sqrt2\cdot 3} = \frac{1}{\sqrt2}$. Two independent routes to the same number.

Algorithm
  1. Ask yourself what the output should be: a vector, a number, or an angle. Their formulas differ.
  2. Calculate $\langle p,v\rangle$, $\langle v,v\rangle$, and $\|p\|^2$ once, before using any formulas.
  3. Take $\lambda = \langle p,v\rangle / \langle v,v\rangle$ and obtain the projection as $\lambda v$.
  4. Subtract: $p_\perp = p - \lambda v$, and immediately check $\langle p_\perp, v\rangle = 0$.
  5. The distance is $\|p_\perp\|$; check it with Pythagoras: $\|p\|^2 = |\proj|^2 + \|p_\perp\|^2$.

EN

Today’s problems form a four-level staircase, and you should take them in order: each level uses what you practiced in the previous one.

Full workload — 16 problems. Everything on the page, including the SHAD level. This is a plan for a good day: fifteen minutes for the drill and an hour and a half for the problems themselves.

Minimum — 10 problems. b0901, b0902, b0904, b0905, b0906, b0907, y0901, y0902, y0903, y0904 — all of Level 3, the two basic Level 2 techniques, and all four YMLS-level finals. The warm-up w0901–w0904 is not counted, but do not skip it: it is oral, about thirty seconds per problem, and should be done right after the lesson. Each warm-up problem is the simplest version of one technique behind a final.

Mandatory — 4 problems. b0904, b0905, b0906, b0907 — exactly all of Level 3, and each is a bridge. b0906 leads directly to two finals: y0901, with the same figure but an angle instead of a cosine, and y0904, where the cosine is also irrational but must be calculated three times and then compared. b0905 leads to y0902, b0907 to mini-test y0903, and b0904 to SHAD problem s0901. If the day goes badly and only forty minutes remain, do these four and the mini-test; carry the rest forward.

Speed drill. It occupies the first fifteen minutes of the Problems slot. Take ten random pairs of vectors in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and calculate the cosine of the angle for each. The goal is 45 seconds per pair without a calculator. Speed matters more than it seems: on the exam this operation will be an intermediate step inside a problem, not the problem itself, and you cannot spend three minutes on it.

The day’s required exercise: calculate every distance in two ways — by subtracting the projection and by Pythagoras. Both paths are shown in b0907; in mini-test y0903 you must build the second one yourself. The method is being checked, not just the answer: if two independent paths give the same number, the arithmetic is sound.

A free safety net

After every cosine calculation, check that $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$. A value above one is an arithmetic error, and you can see it immediately, before comparing with the answer.

About SHAD problem s0901

The day has four finals, all at YMLS level, and s0901 is not one of them: it is above exam level and is not part of the minimum. It is the peak of a separate “angle as a fraction of directions” branch. Its bridge, b0904, remains mandatory for its own reason: the formula $\P = \theta/\pi$ is itself exam material, and dimension reduction by projection returns in least squares. If you are following the minimum plan, carry s0901 forward, not b0904.

Answer format

All numeric answers for the day, except integers, are entered with four digits after the decimal point and a period as separator. Angles are in radians unless the statement explicitly says otherwise.

RU$$1 \cdot 3 + 2 \cdot 4 = 3 + 8 = 11$$

EN$$1 \cdot 3 + 2 \cdot 4 = 3 + 8 = 11$$

The result is a number, not a vector. This simple operation underlies everything else in this topic.

Its sign immediately determines the type of angle, without requiring us to calculate the angle itself: since $11 > 0$, the angle between the vectors is acute. A zero result would mean that the vectors are orthogonal, while a negative result would mean that the angle is obtuse. No further calculation is needed to classify the angle.

EN

No coordinates are given, so choose them yourself: place the vertex at the origin and align the sides with the coordinate axes. You may take the side length to be 1, since scaling the square does not affect the angle.

Solution
RU

$$\langle s, d\rangle = 1, \qquad \|s\| = 1, \qquad \|d\| = \sqrt2$$$$\cos\varphi = \frac{1}{1 \cdot \sqrt2} = \frac{1}{\sqrt2} \approx 0.7071$$

EN

Take a square of side length 1. Place the relevant vertex at the origin and align the sides with the coordinate axes. The side is then represented by the vector $s = (1, 0)$, and the diagonal from the same vertex by $d = (1, 1)$.

$$\langle s, d\rangle = 1, \qquad \|s\| = 1, \qquad \|d\| = \sqrt2$$$$\cos\varphi = \frac{1}{1 \cdot \sqrt2} = \frac{1}{\sqrt2} \approx 0.7071$$

As a check, a diagonal bisects a right angle of a square, so $\varphi = 45°$. Indeed, the cosine of $45°$ is $\frac{\sqrt2}{2}$.

Why calculate something we already know?

Here the answer can be anticipated, so the purpose of the problem is not the arithmetic but the method: a geometric figure with no coordinates is converted into two vectors. For the cube in b0906 and in the final problem y0901, the angle is not immediately apparent, but the procedure is exactly the same.

EN

Find the length of the vector $(1, 2, 2, 4)$.

верно
Hint
RU

EN

The length is the square root of the inner product of the vector with itself. The fact that there are four coordinates makes no difference: the formula works in any dimension.

Solution
RU$$\|(1,2,2,4)\| = \sqrt{\langle (1,2,2,4),\ (1,2,2,4)\rangle} = \sqrt{1 + 4 + 4 + 16} = \sqrt{25} = 5$$

EN$$\|(1,2,2,4)\| = \sqrt{\langle (1,2,2,4),\ (1,2,2,4)\rangle} = \sqrt{1 + 4 + 4 + 16} = \sqrt{25} = 5$$

Although a four-dimensional vector cannot be drawn, its length can still be measured: the definition of length in terms of the inner product carries over unchanged to any dimension.

Where this leads

Length appears in the denominator of every other formula used today, including the cosine of an angle and the length of a projection. An error in the sum of squares here propagates through every subsequent calculation, so check it twice. The integer answer is no accident: the numbers were chosen deliberately.

A quick check

The inequality $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$ is precisely the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality at work. If your result exceeds 1, there must be an arithmetic error.

Вектор проекции: $\proj_u w = \dfrac{\langle w,u\rangle}{\langle u,u\rangle}\,u$ — в знаменателе $\langle u,u\rangle = 9$.

Do not confuse the two formulas

The projection vector is $\proj_u w = \dfrac{\langle w,u\rangle}{\langle u,u\rangle}\,u$, whose denominator is $\langle u,u\rangle = 9$.

The length of the projection is $\dfrac{|\langle w,u\rangle|}{\|u\|}$, whose denominator is $\|u\| = 3$.

EN

Each condition retains exactly half of the possible directions on the circle. Draw both semicircles and determine the arc corresponding to their intersection.

Solution
RU

Угол между $a$ и $l$. $\langle a,l\rangle = 1$, $\|a\| = 1$, $\|l\| = \sqrt{1+3} = 2$, поэтому $\cos\theta = \frac12$ и $\theta = 60° = \frac{\pi}{3}$.

Неравенство $\langle\psi,a\rangle > 0$ означает острый угол с $a$ — это ровно половина окружности направлений.

$$\P = \frac{\pi - \theta}{2\pi} = \frac{\pi - \pi/3}{2\pi} = \frac13 \approx 0.3333$$

EN

Step 1. Find the angle between $a$ and $l$. We have $\langle a,l\rangle = 1$, $\|a\| = 1$, and $\|l\| = \sqrt{1+3} = 2$. Therefore, $\cos\theta = \frac12$ and $\theta = 60° = \frac{\pi}{3}$.

Step 2. Interpret each condition. The inequality $\langle\psi,a\rangle > 0$ means that $\psi$ makes an acute angle with $a$; this accounts for exactly half of the circle of directions. The condition involving $l$ gives another semicircle, rotated through the angle $\theta$.

Step 3. Find the intersection. Two semicircles offset by $\theta$ intersect in an arc of angular measure $\pi - \theta$. Since the direction is uniformly distributed, the probability equals the fraction of the full circle occupied by this arc:

$$\P = \frac{\pi - \theta}{2\pi} = \frac{\pi - \pi/3}{2\pi} = \frac13 \approx 0.3333$$
Check the limiting cases

As $\theta \to 0$, the semicircles nearly coincide, so the probability must approach $\frac12$. As $\theta \to \pi$, they barely intersect, so the probability approaches zero. The formula $\frac{\pi-\theta}{2\pi}$ has exactly this behavior, which makes it plausible.

EN

The two lines perpendicular to $a$ and $l$ divide the circle into four arcs. Determine which arcs are favorable and find their angular measure.

Solution
RU

Угол между $a$ и $l$. $\langle a,l\rangle = -1$, $\|a\| = 1$, $\|l\| = 2$, поэтому $\cos\theta = -\frac12$ и $\theta = 120° = \frac{2\pi}{3}$.

Прямая $\langle\psi,a\rangle = 0$ перпендикулярна $a$, прямая $\langle\psi,l\rangle = 0$ перпендикулярна $l$; угол между самими прямыми равен углу между $a$ и $l$, то есть $\theta$.

$$\P = \frac{2\theta}{2\pi} = \frac{\theta}{\pi} = \frac{2\pi/3}{\pi} = \frac23 \approx 0.6667$$

EN

Step 1. Find the angle between $a$ and $l$. We have $\langle a,l\rangle = -1$, $\|a\| = 1$, and $\|l\| = 2$. Therefore, $\cos\theta = -\frac12$ and $\theta = 120° = \frac{2\pi}{3}$.

Step 2. Partition the circle. The line $\langle\psi,a\rangle = 0$ is perpendicular to $a$, while the line $\langle\psi,l\rangle = 0$ is perpendicular to $l$. Rotating both vectors by $\frac{\pi}{2}$ preserves their angular separation modulo $\pi$. The four boundary rays therefore divide the circle into alternating arcs: two of angular measure $\theta$, on which the products have opposite signs, and two of angular measure $\pi - \theta$, on which the signs agree. As a completeness check, $2\theta + 2(\pi - \theta) = 2\pi$.

Step 3. Calculate the fraction.

$$\P = \frac{2\theta}{2\pi} = \frac{\theta}{\pi} = \frac{2\pi/3}{\pi} = \frac23 \approx 0.6667$$
A reasonableness check

The angle is obtuse, so the vectors point broadly in opposite directions; the signs should therefore disagree more often than they agree. Indeed, $\frac23 > \frac12$.

A method that extends to $\mathbb{R}^n$

The answer depends only on the angle between $a$ and $l$; neither their lengths nor their coordinates appear in it. This is why, in problem s0901, we can first reduce the dimension to a plane and then apply exactly this formula.

EN

Expand the squared norm of the difference in terms of the inner product. Pay close attention to the sign of the cosine.

Solution
RU

$$\langle u, v\rangle = \|u\|\,\|v\|\cos 120° = 3 \cdot 5 \cdot \left(-\frac12\right) = -7.5$$

$$\|u-v\|^2 = \|u\|^2 - 2\langle u,v\rangle + \|v\|^2 = 9 + 15 + 25 = 49$$$$\|u - v\| = 7$$

EN

First convert the angle into an inner product:

$$\langle u, v\rangle = \|u\|\,\|v\|\cos 120° = 3 \cdot 5 \cdot \left(-\frac12\right) = -7.5$$

Now expand the squared norm:

$$\|u-v\|^2 = \|u\|^2 - 2\langle u,v\rangle + \|v\|^2 = 9 + 15 + 25 = 49$$$$\|u - v\| = 7$$
Two consecutive minus signs

A minus sign appears twice: once in the difference formula and once in the cosine of the obtuse angle. They cancel, so the term $-2\langle u,v\rangle = +15$ increases the result. If your answer is less than 5, you have lost exactly one of the two minus signs.

Check with the triangle inequality

The value of $\|u-v\|$ must lie between $|5 - 3| = 2$ and $5 + 3 = 8$. The result 7 lies in this interval and is close to the upper bound, as it should be for an obtuse angle.

The final problem y0902 has the same structure, except that there are three terms and three pairwise inner products.

Solution
RU

$$\langle d, f\rangle = 1 + 1 + 0 = 2, \qquad \|d\| = \sqrt3, \qquad \|f\| = \sqrt2$$$$\cos\varphi = \frac{2}{\sqrt3 \cdot \sqrt2} = \frac{2}{\sqrt6} \approx 0.8165$$

EN

We may take the cube to be a unit cube, since scaling does not affect the angle. Place the vertex at the origin and align the three edges with the coordinate axes. The space diagonal ends at the opposite vertex, so $d = (1,1,1)$. A face diagonal lying in the $Oxy$ plane is $f = (1,1,0)$.

$$\langle d, f\rangle = 1 + 1 + 0 = 2, \qquad \|d\| = \sqrt3, \qquad \|f\| = \sqrt2$$$$\cos\varphi = \frac{2}{\sqrt3 \cdot \sqrt2} = \frac{2}{\sqrt6} \approx 0.8165$$
Check by a second method

The space diagonal decomposes into the face diagonal and an edge perpendicular to that face: $(1,1,1) = (1,1,0) + (0,0,1)$. Thus the face diagonal is the projection of the space diagonal onto the plane of the face, and $\cos\varphi = \frac{\|f\|}{\|d\|} = \frac{\sqrt2}{\sqrt3} \approx 0.8165$. This decomposition and the direct formula give the same result by independent routes.

EN

You already found the projection for this pair of vectors in b0902. From there, you can either subtract the vectors or use the Pythagorean theorem. Try both methods.

Solution
RU

$\langle w,u\rangle = 3 + 2 + 8 = 13$, $\langle u,u\rangle = 9$, поэтому

$$\proj_u w = \frac{13}{9}\,(1,2,2) = \left(\frac{13}{9},\ \frac{26}{9},\ \frac{26}{9}\right)$$$$w_\perp = w - \proj_u w = \left(\frac{27 - 13}{9},\ \frac{9 - 26}{9},\ \frac{36 - 26}{9}\right) = \frac19\,(14,\ -17,\ 10)$$

$$\|w_\perp\| = \frac{\sqrt{196 + 289 + 100}}{9} = \frac{\sqrt{585}}{9} = \frac{\sqrt{65}}{3} \approx 2.6874$$

$$\|w_\perp\| = \sqrt{26 - \frac{169}{9}} = \sqrt{\frac{65}{9}} = \frac{\sqrt{65}}{3} \approx 2.6874$$

EN

Method 1: subtract the projection. Since $\langle w,u\rangle = 3 + 2 + 8 = 13$ and $\langle u,u\rangle = 9$,

$$\proj_u w = \frac{13}{9}\,(1,2,2) = \left(\frac{13}{9},\ \frac{26}{9},\ \frac{26}{9}\right)$$$$w_\perp = w - \proj_u w = \left(\frac{27 - 13}{9},\ \frac{9 - 26}{9},\ \frac{36 - 26}{9}\right) = \frac19\,(14,\ -17,\ 10)$$

We must verify orthogonality: $\langle (14,-17,10),\ (1,2,2)\rangle = 14 - 34 + 20 = 0$. The zero confirms that the decomposition is correct.

$$\|w_\perp\| = \frac{\sqrt{196 + 289 + 100}}{9} = \frac{\sqrt{585}}{9} = \frac{\sqrt{65}}{3} \approx 2.6874$$

Method 2: use the Pythagorean theorem. We have $\|w\|^2 = 9 + 1 + 16 = 26$, and the projection has length $\frac{13}{3}$. Therefore,

$$\|w_\perp\| = \sqrt{26 - \frac{169}{9}} = \sqrt{\frac{65}{9}} = \frac{\sqrt{65}}{3} \approx 2.6874$$

The second method is shorter, but the first produces the vector itself and provides an orthogonality check. In an exam, use the first method for the main calculation and the second to verify it.

This is a distance

The length of the orthogonal component is the distance from the endpoint of $w$ to the line through the origin in the direction of $u$. The short test problem y0903 asks for exactly this quantity, expressed in different words.

$$\|q\| = \sqrt{4 + 1 + 9 + 0 + 1} = \sqrt{15} \approx 3.8730$$

$$\langle q, d_1\rangle = 2 - 1 + 6 + 0 + 0 = 7, \qquad \|d_1\| = \sqrt{1 + 1 + 4 + 4 + 0} = \sqrt{10}$$$$\cos\varphi_1 = \frac{7}{\sqrt{15}\cdot\sqrt{10}} = \frac{7}{\sqrt{150}} \approx 0.5715$$$$\langle q, d_2\rangle = 6 + 0 + 3 + 0 + 2 = 11, \qquad \|d_2\| = \sqrt{9 + 0 + 1 + 1 + 4} = \sqrt{15}$$$$\cos\varphi_2 = \frac{11}{\sqrt{15}\cdot\sqrt{15}} = \frac{11}{15} \approx 0.7333$$$$\langle q, d_3\rangle = 8 + 0 + 3 + 0 + 2 = 13, \qquad \|d_3\| = \sqrt{16 + 0 + 1 + 4 + 4} = 5$$$$\cos\varphi_3 = \frac{13}{5\sqrt{15}} \approx 0.6713$$

EN

The length of the query needs to be calculated only once for all three documents:

$$\|q\| = \sqrt{4 + 1 + 9 + 0 + 1} = \sqrt{15} \approx 3.8730$$

Now consider each document in turn.

$$\langle q, d_1\rangle = 2 - 1 + 6 + 0 + 0 = 7, \qquad \|d_1\| = \sqrt{1 + 1 + 4 + 4 + 0} = \sqrt{10}$$$$\cos\varphi_1 = \frac{7}{\sqrt{15}\cdot\sqrt{10}} = \frac{7}{\sqrt{150}} \approx 0.5715$$$$\langle q, d_2\rangle = 6 + 0 + 3 + 0 + 2 = 11, \qquad \|d_2\| = \sqrt{9 + 0 + 1 + 1 + 4} = \sqrt{15}$$$$\cos\varphi_2 = \frac{11}{\sqrt{15}\cdot\sqrt{15}} = \frac{11}{15} \approx 0.7333$$$$\langle q, d_3\rangle = 8 + 0 + 3 + 0 + 2 = 13, \qquad \|d_3\| = \sqrt{16 + 0 + 1 + 4 + 4} = 5$$$$\cos\varphi_3 = \frac{13}{5\sqrt{15}} \approx 0.6713$$

There is no need to evaluate the square roots in order to compare the results. All three cosines are positive, so their order is the same as the order of their squares. Squaring removes the roots and gives the fractions $\frac{49}{150} \approx 0.327$, $\frac{121}{225} \approx 0.538$, and $\frac{169}{375} \approx 0.451$.

The second document has the greatest similarity: $\frac{11}{15} \approx 0.7333$. This is the only one of the three values that can be calculated exactly without approximation. All three cosines lie in $[-1, 1]$, as required.

The greatest inner product need not give the greatest similarity

The third document has the largest inner product, 13 rather than 11, yet its cosine similarity is smaller. The reason is its length: $\|d_3\| = 5$, whereas $\|d_2\| = \sqrt{15} \approx 3.8730$. Comparing only the numerators leads to the wrong document; this is the trap in the problem.

This is exactly how machine learning uses cosine similarity

Search and recommendation systems select the nearest candidate in precisely this way: they calculate the cosine between the query vector and each document vector, then take the maximum. The only differences are the dimension—typically 768 or 1536 rather than 5—and the number of candidates, which may be in the millions. For this reason, the lengths $\|d_i\|$ are calculated in advance and stored with the vectors.

Cosine similarity deliberately ignores magnitude: the longer vector $d_3$ receives no advantage merely for being long. A value of about $0.73$ indicates that the vectors are reasonably similar; for embeddings, a cosine above $0.8$ is often considered close.

$$\sign\langle\psi_k, a\rangle \cdot \sign\langle\psi_k, l\rangle > 0$$

EN

A random vector $\Psi$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ has a standard normal distribution, with zero mean and the identity covariance matrix. Two players have fixed vectors $a$ and $l$ in advance.

In round $k$, an independent realization $\psi_k$ is drawn. Lyosha receives one point if

$$\sign\langle\psi_k, a\rangle \cdot \sign\langle\psi_k, l\rangle > 0$$

Artyom receives one point if this product is negative. Points are only awarded: no points are deducted for losing a round. The event that the product is zero has probability zero and is not included.

As $k \to \infty$, what does the ratio of Artyom's score to the number of rounds played approach? Give your answer for $a = (1, 0)$ and $l = (1, 1)$. Round your answer to four decimal places.

EN

The outcome of a round depends only on the signs of the inner products, and hence only on the angle. The lengths of the vectors do not matter.

Solution
RU

$$\langle a, \psi\rangle = \langle a, \psi_1\rangle, \qquad \langle l, \psi\rangle = \langle l, \psi_1\rangle$$

Условие $\langle\psi_1, a\rangle = 0$ задаёт на плоскости прямую, перпендикулярную $a$; условие $\langle\psi_1, l\rangle = 0$ — прямую, перпендикулярную $l$.

$$\P(\text{очко Артёму}) = \frac{2\phi}{2\pi} = \frac{\phi}{\pi}$$

$$\frac{\text{очки Артёма}}{\text{число раундов}} \longrightarrow \frac{\phi}{\pi} = \frac{1}{\pi}\arccos\frac{\langle a,l\rangle}{\|a\|\,\|l\|}$$

$\langle a,l\rangle = 1$, $\|a\| = 1$, $\|l\| = \sqrt2$, значит $\cos\phi = \frac{1}{\sqrt2}$ и $\phi = \frac{\pi}{4}$.

$$\frac{\phi}{\pi} = \frac{\pi/4}{\pi} = \frac14 = 0.2500$$

EN

Step 1. Reduce the dimension. Let $\mathcal{L}$ be the plane spanned by $a$ and $l$. For any vector $\psi$, let $\psi_1$ be its orthogonal projection onto $\mathcal{L}$. The difference $\psi - \psi_1$ is perpendicular to the plane and therefore to both vectors:

$$\langle a, \psi\rangle = \langle a, \psi_1\rangle, \qquad \langle l, \psi\rangle = \langle l, \psi_1\rangle$$

Thus, the outcome of the round depends only on the projection. The $n$-dimensional problem has been reduced to a planar one.

Step 2. Use a property of the normal distribution. The projection of a standard normal vector onto a plane is again a standard normal vector, now in two dimensions. Its direction is uniformly distributed on the circle.

Step 3. Calculate the geometric probability. In the plane, the condition $\langle\psi_1, a\rangle = 0$ defines a line perpendicular to $a$, while $\langle\psi_1, l\rangle = 0$ defines a line perpendicular to $l$. Rotating both vectors by $\frac{\pi}{2}$ preserves their angular separation modulo $\pi$. The four boundary rays divide the plane into alternating sectors: two with angular measure $\phi$, where the signs of the inner products differ, and two with angular measure $\pi - \phi$, where the signs agree. As a check, $2\phi + 2(\pi-\phi) = 2\pi$. Which pair of sectors is wider depends on whether $\phi$ is acute or obtuse, but this does not affect the formula.

Artyom receives a point precisely when the direction lies in one of the sectors of angular measure $\phi$. Since the direction is uniformly distributed,

$$\P(\text{Artyom scores}) = \frac{2\phi}{2\pi} = \frac{\phi}{\pi}$$

This is exactly the formula derived for the plane in problem b0904.

Step 4. Apply the law of large numbers. The rounds are independent and identically distributed, and points are only awarded, so Artyom's score is simply the number of rounds he wins. The ratio of his score to the number of rounds is the frequency of this event, which converges to its probability:

$$\frac{\text{Artyom's score}}{\text{number of rounds}} \longrightarrow \frac{\phi}{\pi} = \frac{1}{\pi}\arccos\frac{\langle a,l\rangle}{\|a\|\,\|l\|}$$

Substitute the given vectors. We have $\langle a,l\rangle = 1$, $\|a\| = 1$, and $\|l\| = \sqrt2$. Hence $\cos\phi = \frac{1}{\sqrt2}$ and $\phi = \frac{\pi}{4}$.

$$\frac{\phi}{\pi} = \frac{\pi/4}{\pi} = \frac14 = 0.2500$$
A common wrong turn

It is tempting to calculate the score margin. If $p = 1 - \phi/\pi$ denotes Lyosha's share of the rounds, then the difference $p - (1 - p) = 2p - 1$ equals $0.5$, which looks appealing. But that answers a different question: this calculation would apply if a point were deducted for losing a round. The problem explicitly states that points are only awarded, so we need the share itself, not the margin.

As a reasonableness check, the answer must lie in $[0, 1]$ and approach zero as $\phi \to 0$, when the vectors point in nearly the same direction and Artyom has almost no chance of scoring. The formula $\phi/\pi$ satisfies both conditions.

Three ideas in one problem

First: projection preserves inner products with vectors in the subspace, allowing us to flatten a high-dimensional problem into a planar one.

Second: the direction of a normal vector is uniformly distributed. This connects linear algebra with the geometric probability studied on Day 2.

Third: the law of large numbers turns the ratio of points to rounds into the probability of the outcome in a single round.

None of these ideas is difficult on its own, and any one of them could readily appear on YMLS. What makes this a SHAD-level problem is the need to combine all three.

EN

Decompose the position vector of the point into a component along the line and a component perpendicular to it. Then apply the Pythagorean theorem.

Solution
RU

$$\frac{\langle p, v\rangle}{\|v\|} = \frac{2 - 1 + 2}{3} = 1$$

$$d = \sqrt{\|p\|^2 - \left(\frac{\langle p,v\rangle}{\|v\|}\right)^2} = \sqrt{3 - 1} = \sqrt2 \approx 1.4142$$

$\proj_v(p) = \frac{3}{9}(2,-1,2) = \left(\frac23, -\frac13, \frac23\right)$, остаток $p_\perp = \left(\frac13, \frac43, \frac13\right)$, его длина $\frac{\sqrt{1 + 16 + 1}}{3} = \frac{\sqrt{18}}{3} = \sqrt2$.

EN

Let $p = (1,1,1)$.

The component along the line has length

$$\frac{\langle p, v\rangle}{\|v\|} = \frac{2 - 1 + 2}{3} = 1$$

The full vector has length $\|p\| = \sqrt{3}$.

The two components are perpendicular, so the required distance follows from the Pythagorean theorem:

$$d = \sqrt{\|p\|^2 - \left(\frac{\langle p,v\rangle}{\|v\|}\right)^2} = \sqrt{3 - 1} = \sqrt2 \approx 1.4142$$

Check by a second method. We have $\proj_v(p) = \frac{3}{9}(2,-1,2) = \left(\frac23, -\frac13, \frac23\right)$, so the remainder is $p_\perp = \left(\frac13, \frac43, \frac13\right)$. Its length is $\frac{\sqrt{1 + 16 + 1}}{3} = \frac{\sqrt{18}}{3} = \sqrt2$, confirming the result.

A method that works in any dimension

Decompose the vector into a component along the given direction and a component orthogonal to it. The length of the first is the projection; the length of the second is the required distance; and the two are related by the Pythagorean theorem.

In $\mathbb{R}^3$, this can still be visualized. In $\mathbb{R}^{100}$, it cannot, but the formula works in exactly the same way. That is the value of the algebraic approach.

EN

Divide errors into two types and record each one. Type one is choosing the wrong formula: confusing $\|v\|$ with $\langle v,v\rangle$ in the projection denominator, calculating a vector when a number was requested, or giving a cosine instead of an angle. Type two is a correct formula with a mismatched answer: a lost minus sign for an obtuse angle, a forgotten square root, or an error in adding squares.

The diagnoses differ. Fix the first with a dimensional check, said aloud before calculating. Fix the second by using two independent routes to each number and checking $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$. If you have more than two errors of the second type today, tomorrow, in matrices and determinants, they will become sign errors in a determinant — much harder to catch there.
