EN

Yesterday you already lived through this entire day: Mock #2 followed the same four-hour protocol. The only difference is that today’s attempt is the real one, and there is only one. Repeat everything that worked yesterday exactly: the same start time, the same desk, the same breakfast, the same dose of coffee. The sheet with the single conclusion you wrote yesterday evening goes to the right of the keyboard before 10:00—and it is the only new piece of paper you read today.

Both timing numbers come from day 7, where they were announced together: a 12-minute attempt cutoff and a 25-minute total ceiling per problem. That mock was deliberately compressed to 2:30 so you could learn to abandon problems in a safe setting. Today you have four hours, and neither number changes: 12 minutes per attempt, 25 minutes per problem across all attempts, and 25 is an exit, not a warning.

The optimism coefficient comes from there too: actual time divided by the estimate from the labeling, over problems carried through to an answer. It was collected on August 28 and refined yesterday; today it works in one direction—all time estimates are multiplied by it.

Day 12 contributes the main tactical fact: no justification is required, so a numerical answer is as valid as an analytical one. Enumeration and simulation are standard routes, not emergency backups, and you switch to them by the clock, not out of desperation.

The mocks page has a diagnostic snapshot from day 1—the baseline where everything began. Do not open it today: exactly three things are allowed, and looking at old results is not one of them. You put your own evidence of growth to the right of the keyboard yesterday: the sheet with one conclusion after Mock #2. That is what you will need around 12:40, when two problems are stalled.

EN

Bridge problem b1203 is the same problem with one fixed side. Determine what changes when the side is the “nearest” one.

Solution
RU

$$y > \left(x - \tfrac12\right)^{2} + \frac14$$

Парабола пересекает сторону $y = x$ там, где $\left(x-\frac12\right)^{2} + \frac14 = x$, то есть $x^{2} - 2x + \frac12 = 0$ и $x = 1 - \frac{\sqrt2}{2} \approx 0.2929$; вторая точка по симметрии — $x = \frac{\sqrt2}{2}$.

$$S = 2\int_{u_0}^{0}\left(u + \frac14 - u^{2}\right)du = \frac{\sqrt2}{3} - \frac{5}{12}, \qquad u_0 = \frac{1-\sqrt2}{2}$$$$\P = 4S = \frac{4\sqrt2 - 5}{3} \approx 0.218951$$

import numpy as np
p = np.random.default_rng(0).random((6_000_000, 2))
dc = np.hypot(p[:,0] - .5, p[:,1] - .5)                    # до центра
db = np.minimum(np.minimum(p[:,0], 1 - p[:,0]),
                np.minimum(p[:,1], 1 - p[:,1])) # до ближайшей стороны
print((dc < db).mean())      # 0.2188293...

EN

Step 1. Partition the square. The diagonals divide it into four congruent triangles, and a different side is nearest in each one. In the bottom triangle, described by $y<x$ and $y<1-x$, the bottom side is nearest. By symmetry, it is enough to calculate the required area there and multiply by 4.

Step 2. The boundary is the same parabola as in b1203. After squaring, the condition “closer to the center than to the bottom side” becomes

$$y > \left(x - \tfrac12\right)^{2} + \frac14$$

Step 3. Integration limits. The parabola intersects the side $y=x$ when $\left(x-\frac12\right)^2+\frac14=x$, or $x^2-2x+\frac12=0$. Thus $x=1-\frac{\sqrt2}{2}\approx0.2929$; the other intersection is, by symmetry, $x=\frac{\sqrt2}{2}$.

Step 4. Integral. Between these limits, the region lies above the parabola and below a side of the triangle. With the substitution $u=x-\frac12$, the vertical width is $u+\frac14-u^2$. Symmetry about $x=\frac12$ allows us to integrate over half the region and double:

$$S = 2\int_{u_0}^{0}\left(u + \frac14 - u^{2}\right)du = \frac{\sqrt2}{3} - \frac{5}{12}, \qquad u_0 = \frac{1-\sqrt2}{2}$$$$\P = 4S = \frac{4\sqrt2 - 5}{3} \approx 0.218951$$

Answer: 0.2190.

Simulation check.

import numpy as np
p = np.random.default_rng(0).random((6_000_000, 2))
dc = np.hypot(p[:,0] - .5, p[:,1] - .5)                    # distance to the center
db = np.minimum(np.minimum(p[:,0], 1 - p[:,0]),
                np.minimum(p[:,1], 1 - p[:,1])) # distance to the nearest side
print((dc < db).mean())      # 0.2188293...
The lesson of the day in one problem

Six million simulated points give $0.21883$, while the exact answer is $0.218951$. Three decimal places agree, but the fourth does not, so submitting the simulation result would be wrong. This is exactly what the $1/\sqrt{N}$ rule predicts: about $10^8$ trials are needed for the fourth decimal place.

The correct strategy is to use simulation to verify the region and analysis to obtain precision. If no analytical method is available, run one hundred million trials and recognize that the last digit is uncertain.

$$d = \frac{|\langle n, p\rangle - c|}{\|n\|} = \frac{|-1 - 9|}{3} = \frac{10}{3} \approx 3.3333$$

EN

Read the normal directly from the equation: $n=(2,-1,2)$, with norm $\|n\|=\sqrt{4+1+4}=3$. Its inner product with the point is $\langle n,p\rangle=4-1-4=-1$.

$$d = \frac{|\langle n, p\rangle - c|}{\|n\|} = \frac{|-1 - 9|}{3} = \frac{10}{3} \approx 3.3333$$
Common substitution errors

The numerator is the absolute value of the residual $\langle n,p\rangle-c$, not the sum of the coordinates and not $\langle n,p\rangle+c$. The constant term must be moved to the same side as the point evaluation. A negative residual only means that the point and the origin lie on opposite sides of the plane; it has no effect on the distance.

EN

Use the tail-sum formula: $\P(L \ge k)$ is easier to calculate than $\P(L = k)$.

Solution
RU

$$\P(L \ge k) = \left(\frac12\right)^{k-1}$$

$$\E L = \sum_{k \ge 1}\P(L \ge k) = \sum_{k \ge 1}\left(\frac12\right)^{k-1} = \frac{1}{1 - \frac12} = 2$$

EN

The run has length at least $k$ if and only if the first $k$ tosses are equal. The first toss determines the outcome, and each subsequent toss must match it:

$$\P(L \ge k) = \left(\frac12\right)^{k-1}$$

By the tail-sum formula,

$$\E L = \sum_{k \ge 1}\P(L \ge k) = \sum_{k \ge 1}\left(\frac12\right)^{k-1} = \frac{1}{1 - \frac12} = 2$$
Why the tail-sum formula is convenient here

Directly evaluating $\sum k\,\P(L=k)$ leaves a factor of $k$ inside the series. The tail-sum formula reduces the problem to an ordinary geometric series.

In bridge problem b1202, there were five tosses and the same sum stopped at $k=5$, giving $31/16=1.9375$. Here there is no cutoff, and the answer is exactly 2. These values provide an immediate estimate: for five tosses the answer must be slightly below 2, and with indefinitely many tosses it is 2.

EN

With ten numbers, enumerating all forty-five pairs is enough; this is the technique from b1101, with XOR instead of addition. The fast approach uses the same bitwise descent as bridge problem b1105, but in the opposite direction. Then consider how to answer the query if there are $2 \cdot 10^5$ numbers arriving one by one.

3$: $7 \oplus 3 = 0111_2 \oplus 0011_2 = 0100_2 = 4$.

from itertools import combinations
print(min(x ^ y for x, y in combinations(G, 2))) # 4

EN

For the given data, the answer is 4, attained by 7 and 3: $7 \oplus 3 = 0111_2 \oplus 0011_2 = 0100_2 = 4$.

from itertools import combinations
print(min(x ^ y for x, y in combinations(G, 2))) # 4

Pair enumeration takes $O(n^2)$ time and involves only 45 pairs here. It is too slow under olympiad constraints ($n$ up to $2\cdot10^5$, values below $2^{30}$), so a different approach is required.

The appropriate solution is a binary prefix tree, or binary trie.

Store the binary representations of the numbers in a tree as strings of length $K=30$, from the most significant bit to the least significant. When a new number $X$ arrives, perform two operations:

  1. Find a number $Y$ in the trie minimizing its XOR with $X$. Descend from the root. At each depth, first try the branch with the same bit as $X$, which contributes zero at this position. If that branch does not exist, take the only available branch.
  2. Insert $X$ into the trie.

Maintain the answer as the minimum over all insertions.

Why the greedy descent is correct. Suppose both branches are available at depth $d$. Matching the bit contributes zero at this position, while differing contributes one, with value $2^{K-d}$. One more significant bit outweighs all less significant bits combined, as established in the Bridge section. Therefore matching the more significant bit is preferable to any possible gain below it, and the greedy choice is optimal.

The time and space complexity are $O(NK)$, where $K$ is the number of bits.

A third method for checking

The rule from the Triggers section applies: the minimum XOR is always attained by two adjacent values in sorted order. Here is the proof. Let $x<y<z$, and let $b$ be the most significant bit at which $x$ and $z$ differ. At this bit, $x$ has zero and $z$ has one, so $x\oplus z \ge 2^b$. All bits above $b$ coincide in $x$ and $z$. Since $y$ lies between them, it agrees with both in those higher bits. At bit $b$, either $y$ has zero, giving $x\oplus y < 2^b$, or it has one, giving $y\oplus z < 2^b$. In either case, a closer pair is strictly better than the outer pair. Thus a pair with a third number between its members never needs to be checked.

Sort the values: 3, 7, 13, 18, 25, 29, 38, 44, 52, 60. Check only nine adjacent pairs rather than forty-five. Their XORs are 4, 10, 31, 11, 4, 59, 10, 24, 8. The minimum, 4, is attained twice: $3 \oplus 7 = 4$ and $25 \oplus 29 = 4$. This agrees with exhaustive search and is an independent check.

The takeaway

The principle “a more significant bit outweighs all less significant bits combined” is universal in bitwise problems. It turns an exhaustive search into a greedy tree descent: the same kind of halving as binary search, except that the candidate set is partitioned by the next bit rather than by a numeric interval.

A full-strength version is unlikely on YMLS, but the underlying technique of processing numbers bit by bit, from most significant to least significant, may well be useful.

Дана интегрируемая функция $f: \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ такая, что

$$\int_{-\infty}^{+\infty} f(x)\,dx = 2025$$

Найдите $\displaystyle\int_{-\infty}^{+\infty} f\!\left(x - \frac1x\right)dx$.

EN

Let $f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ be an integrable function such that

$$\int_{-\infty}^{+\infty} f(x)\,dx = 2025$$

Find $\displaystyle\int_{-\infty}^{+\infty} f\!\left(x - \frac1x\right)dx$.

EN

The answer is the same. Determine why: the substitution behaves differently from an ordinary one-to-one change of variables.

Solution
RU

$$x^2 - yx - 1 = 0$$

Обозначим их $x_1(y)$ и $x_2(y)$.

$$\int_{\mathbb{R}} f\!\left(x - \tfrac1x\right)dx = \int_{\mathbb{R}}\big(|x_1'(y)| + |x_2'(y)|\big)f(y)\,dy = \int_{\mathbb{R}} f(y)\,dy = 2025$$

EN

Answer: 2025.

Idea. Consider $\varphi(x)=x-\frac1x$. On each interval $(-\infty,0)$ and $(0,+\infty)$, this function is strictly increasing and maps the interval onto the entire real line $\mathbb{R}$.

Therefore, under the change of variables, every point $y$ has exactly two preimages: the roots of

$$x^2 - yx - 1 = 0$$

Denote them by $x_1(y)$ and $x_2(y)$. By Vieta's formulas,

$$x_1(y) + x_2(y) = y$$

Differentiate this identity with respect to $y$:

$$x_1'(y) + x_2'(y) = 1$$

Both branches are increasing, so their derivatives are positive and the absolute values can be removed. Hence

$$\int_{\mathbb{R}} f\!\left(x - \tfrac1x\right)dx = \int_{\mathbb{R}}\big(|x_1'(y)| + |x_2'(y)|\big)f(y)\,dy = \int_{\mathbb{R}} f(y)\,dy = 2025$$
A check that catches a flaw in the reasoning

Test the claim computationally with a specific $f$: take the standard normal density multiplied by 2025 and evaluate both integrals numerically. Use mpmath.quad separately on $(-\infty,0)$ and $(0,+\infty)$ because the integrand varies sharply near zero. The results agree. This is not a proof, but it is an effective way to distinguish a correct argument from an attractive but false one.

The YMLS takeaway

Use the technique “a substitution that merges two branches.” When a substitution is not one-to-one, sum over all branches; the Jacobian factors often combine into something simple.

This exact form is unlikely on YMLS. A related method that appears regularly is the symmetrization $\int_a^b f(x)dx = \int_a^b f(a+b-x)dx$ from Day 8. The idea is the same: exploit the structure of the substitution instead of evaluating the integral directly.

Inside it, an $(n-1) \times (n-1)$ square is drawn along the grid lines; inside that, an $(n-2) \times (n-2)$ square is drawn, and so on until a $1 \times 1$ square remains. The final square is the cell with coordinates $(x, y)$.

How many different sequences of squares have this property? Give the answer for $n = 10$, $x = 4$, and $y = 7$.

EN

How can a $(k-1) \times (k-1)$ square be obtained from a $k \times k$ square? How many independent choices does each step involve?

Solution
RU

$$N = \binom{n-1}{x-1}\binom{n-1}{y-1}$$

Подставляем $n = 10$, $x = 4$, $y = 7$:

$$\binom{9}{3}\binom{9}{6} = 84 \cdot 84 = 7056$$

EN

Key observation. A $(k-1) \times (k-1)$ square can be placed inside a $k \times k$ square in exactly four ways: remove either the left or the right column, and either the top or the bottom row. The choices for rows and columns are independent.

There are $n - 1$ steps in total. At each step, one column (left or right) and one row (top or bottom) are removed.

Columns. Encode the history of column removals by a string of $n-1$ symbols: L if the left column was removed at that step and R if the right column was removed. The final cell has first coordinate $x$ exactly when a total of $x - 1$ columns were removed from the left. The number of strings with exactly $x-1$ occurrences of L is $\binom{n-1}{x-1}$; once again, the problem reduces to choosing the positions occupied by one type of symbol.

Rows. Similarly, there are $\binom{n-1}{y-1}$ possible row-removal histories.

Every pair of histories gives a distinct sequence of squares, so we multiply:

$$N = \binom{n-1}{x-1}\binom{n-1}{y-1}$$

Substituting $n = 10$, $x = 4$, and $y = 7$ gives

$$\binom{9}{3}\binom{9}{6} = 84 \cdot 84 = 7056$$
Main takeaway

Split the problem along independent axes. What looked like a search through nested squares becomes two independent strings: the order in which columns were removed and the order in which rows were removed. Whenever a problem splits into independent parts, the total count is the product of the counts for those parts. This technique will return often.

EN

Everything you know on the morning of September 4 is everything you will have. Preparation ended yesterday. Today the amount of knowledge no longer changes; only the share of that knowledge that reaches the answer field changes.

The gap between those two quantities is larger than it seems, and you saw it in both mocks. A correctly solved problem entered in the wrong format, and a problem you never reached because you got stuck on a neighbor, both produce exactly the same zero as not knowing the topic. Today is entirely about that gap—in other words, behavior rather than mathematics.

The stakes: 35 places, an attempt window through September 10, but your attempt is scheduled for today and there is only one. Wrong answers are not penalized, so the lower bound on your result is determined not by knowledge but by discipline: a blank field is a guaranteed zero, while a plausible estimate has some chance.

The pre-start workload is deliberately below normal: one hour twenty-five minutes rather than four, from 08:00 to 09:25, followed by a break. This is not leniency. Four hours of review before four hours of an exam would be eight hours of concentration in a row, and the second half would receive exactly what remains of the first.

  • метка A (вижу решение целиком), B (вижу тему и первый ход), C (не вижу даже темы);
  • оценка в минутах — сколько, по-твоему, займёт;

Today’s rule: nothing new

Do not open an unfamiliar problem, a walkthrough, or a topic that did not work yesterday. This is not superstition or a “mindset”; it follows from how working memory is built: it holds a limited number of objects at once, recovers slowly, and costs the same for solving a problem as for trying to learn one more thing.

Trying to learn at 08:40 what did not stick in twelve days costs about one solved problem at 12:20. The trade is unfavorable and irreversible.

Exactly three things are allowed: recognize—say the eleven “Bridge” points aloud; confirm—three problems you can certainly solve; reread—the error log. All three concern what is already yours, and none adds anything new.

Only learning actions count. The five-minute “is everything open?” check at 09:20 is not one of the three and does not conflict with them: it is about technology, not mathematics, and has its own slot for that reason.

The card trainer is especially dangerous

It is designed to serve up what you remember least well. That is exactly what you must not do today: one hour before the start, you need confirmation that your hand moves, not a diagnosis of gaps. The trainer opens again on September 6; September 5 is a reserve attempt day, kept free with no study load.

Mapping the four hours

The times are absolute, so you do not have to calculate them in your head during the exam.

Keep this table on paper to the left of the keyboard. You do not need it in a browser tab: switching tabs costs attention; paper does not switch.

The first ten minutes: classification, no calculations

For each of the eight problems, record three things:

  • Label A (I see the complete solution), B (I see the topic and first move), or C (I do not even see the topic);
  • Estimate in minutes—how long you think it will take;
  • Topic word—one word describing what the problem is about.

This is what you did on August 28 in Mock #1 and yesterday in Mock #2. Nothing new enters today, including in the classification.

Split the ten minutes as on August 28: eight minutes for eight lines, one minute per problem, and the last two minutes for ordering. Half of that minute goes to reading. It is enough because the label is assigned by recognizing the type, not estimating the solution. Assign the label once and do not change it: it is the initial classification, not a performance rating, and C is not punishment for a failed attempt. Only the estimate changes, for a problem that turns out to be entirely different from how it looked while reading.

Multiply estimates by the optimism coefficient—the one collected in Mock #1 and refined yesterday: actual time divided by the labeling estimate, over problems carried through to an answer. If you wrote “8 minutes” with coefficient 2, plan on sixteen. This is the only arithmetic worth doing to the labels, and do it mentally, in one pass over all eight.

Take problems in increasing estimate within each label: all A first, starting with the shortest, then B, then C. Problem numbers mean nothing. The authors do not sort by difficulty, and problem eight regularly turns out to be the easiest in the set.

Screen after the first attempt. If you cannot say in one sentence what exactly is missing, move the problem to the end of the queue and take it last. Screening changes the queue but does not close the problem; only the 25-minute ceiling closes it.

What if there are fewer than three A-labeled problems?

Nothing special. Label A is assigned by recognition, and an unfamiliar set produces fewer recognitions. Keep the same schedule; part of 10:10–11:30 simply goes to B. The only forbidden move is to reclassify, hoping that a second look will make something recognizable.

Three numbers to know by heart

  1. One minute—classification of one problem. Eight minutes for all eight; the last two minutes of the ten-minute block are for ordering. Longer than a minute means you are already solving, not classifying.
  2. 12 minutes—the attempt cutoff. If a problem has not moved in one 12-minute attempt, mark “return,” write one line about where you got stuck, and leave. The problem’s label does not change. Return only after the full round through all eight.
  3. 25 minutes—the total problem ceiling across all attempts. Put a reasonable estimate in the field and close it permanently. There is no return. No “five more minutes”: 25 is an exit, not a warning.

Why have a ceiling at all? Eight problems in four hours average thirty minutes each, and a problem that consumes an hour steals the entire time for two others. The 25-minute ceiling exists precisely to prevent that hour. The people who lose are not those who knew nothing, but those who knew and never finished.

An external sign of getting stuck

You repeat the same transformation for the third time, changing it slightly each time, and it still does not close. That is a loop, not proximity to a solution. The clock at that moment does not show what you think: subjective time under pressure moves noticeably faster than real time. That is why the ceiling is set by an alarm, not by feeling.

Two breaks: 11:30 and 12:30

There are two breaks, by the clock: at 11:30—one minute (stand up, look away from the screen, sit down); at 12:30—three minutes and water.

Not “if I get tired,” but according to the schedule. Even in the middle of a derivation, an unfinished line can wait three minutes, and the attention you recover will work for the next hour and a half. The first break is short and therefore feels optional; skipping it means giving the entire second hour to inaccurate work before fatigue becomes visible.

Fatigue reduces accuracy more than lack of topic knowledge, and it is almost impossible to notice from inside: it appears not as “I am tired,” but as an arithmetic mistake on easy ground. That is why the break decision is made in advance and is not discussed today.

The numerical route is standard, not a backup

No justification is required; only a number is accepted. This gives three branches, and you choose between them by the clock, not out of desperation: if ten minutes after starting a problem the analytical route is not visible but the numerical route is, switch without hesitation.

  • The outcome space is finite and has fewer than a few million elements—enumerate everything; the answer will be exact
  • Infinitely many outcomes—simulate, but account for accuracy: a million trials give about three reliable digits, and with four required digits this checks an analytical answer rather than replacing it; four digits need one hundred million trials
  • You have an analytical expression but cannot simplify it or do not trust it—use SymPy

Keep the templates from “Arsenal” open in a separate tab until 10:00. Do not write them from scratch in the exam: ten minutes debugging code is half a problem.

The input field

This is a procedure rather than a rule, and it has four steps.

  1. The first accepted answer also tests the format. On the first problem you close, see how the system accepted the number: how many digits it kept and how it treated the separator. Enter all eight the same way afterward.
  2. Round once, at the very end. Keep full precision during the derivation, especially in Python. Rounding along the way causes a mismatch in the fourth digit, and that is exactly the digit being checked.
  3. The field takes a number, not an expression. Not 2/7, not sqrt(2), not 0.2857 (approx.). Four digits after the decimal point, a period as separator, no spaces or units. An integer has no decimal part.
  4. Ask three questions before entering it. Is it plausible: probability in $[0,1]$, count a nonnegative integer, mean within the value range, $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$, sensible order of magnitude? Is it the right type: if they asked for a count, the answer must be an integer? Is it in the right format?
No blank fields

There is no penalty for a wrong answer. A blank is a guaranteed zero; a plausible estimate has a nonzero chance. Use an order-of-magnitude estimate, the answer for a simplified case, a symmetric value, or the mean of a range. Forty seconds for such an estimate is today’s best trade.

Panic and fatigue are different

They need different treatments, so distinguish them first.

Panic sounds like “I cannot remember what I definitely knew.” The statement will not stay in your head, your hands are cold, and a familiar problem suddenly will not solve. This is physiology, not character: working memory has narrowed. Treat it with movement—put the pen down, take three slow breaths, walk ten steps, then take the shortest remaining problem by estimate.

Fatigue sounds like “I am reading this line for the third time.” Arithmetic falls apart on easy ground, and the same calculation gives different numbers. Treat it with three minutes standing, water, and a switch to mechanical work—checking something already solved.

The common thread is that both are treated by changing problems, not by willpower. One closed task restores your ability to work better than any self-talk.

What to remember if things get really bad

You already went through the SHAD selection, did not pass, and came back with systematic preparation instead of resentment. Today’s attempt is neither the first nor the last; the window closes only on September 10. This thought costs ten seconds and restores your ability to calculate.

The last twenty minutes

At 13:40, stop solving regardless of which step you are on. The remaining twenty minutes are separate work, not the leftover of the previous phase. Make three passes strictly in this order:

  1. Empty fields. Put a reasonable estimate in every blank. A blank is worth exactly as much as a wrong answer, and wrong answers are not penalized.
  2. Format all eight. Four digits after the decimal point, a period as separator, no spaces or units.
  3. Plausibility. Probability in $[0,1]$, count a nonnegative integer, mean within the value range, $|\cos\varphi| \le 1$, sensible order of magnitude.

This order is deliberate because a blank costs more than imprecise rounding. And every number entered in step 1 must pass steps 2 and 3 together with all the others: an estimate entered in haste that fails the format is just a blank line with one minute spent on it.

Do not recalculate a problem during these twenty minutes. Recalculation under time pressure ruins a correct answer more often than it repairs a wrong one.

After 14:00: the hour worth more than the exam itself

The exam is over, and the only genuinely productive work of the day begins.

In one day, half the statements will be forgotten; in three, almost all. The in-person written stage on September 20 tests the same mathematics in another format, and the eight real problems from the authors are the best available source for what they ask and how. No guesswork replaces that source, and you can reconstruct it only today.

Use one page per problem:

  1. Given—all numbers and conditions you remember verbatim.
  2. Asked—one line, including the required precision.
  3. What I did—the plan, not the derivation: “reduced to combinations,” “used integration by parts,” “enumerated.”
  4. What I entered—the number that went into the field.
  5. Label and minutes—the label you assigned at 10:05 and how long the problem actually consumed.

The fifth item is not for September 20 but for you. Comparing the first label with actual time is the only way to learn how accurately you estimate a problem at first sight. That skill is worth more than any individual topic: it determines which problems you can take at all next time.

Do not write walkthroughs in the log today

Only statements and behavior. Reviewing solutions before results are announced is useless, and today it is harmful too: it turns into “what if it was different?” and runs into the night without changing anything.

The twenty-fifth minute on a problem

RU

EN

Episode. It is 13:18, during the “C and returns” slot. Problem 5 has had two attempts, and both were legitimate.

The first ran 10:40–10:52, exactly twelve minutes. The problem did not move: no new line and no new plan. Mark “return,” write one line about where you got stuck, and leave. The A label assigned at 10:05 did not change—it is the initial classification, not a performance rating.

The round closed by 13:00: every one of the eight problems had received an attempt, and problems 7 and 8 had plausible estimates in the form. Only then is a return allowed at all.

The second attempt began at 13:05, and the problem moved: every minute produced a new line, so the “no progress in 12 minutes” cutoff did not apply. It is now 13:18. Total across both attempts is $12 + 13 = 25$ minutes. The ceiling has been reached.

What is analyzed is not the problem but the behavior: there is not a formula below, because solving is already too late, while the decision about what to do is still being made.

Step 1. Take your hands off the keyboard and look at the clock, not the problem. The first action is not “one more substitution” but recording the fact that the ceiling has fired. Do not ask “how much is left before the answer?” At the twenty-fifth minute, a solution always feels close—that is a property of the state, not the problem. Twenty-five is an exit, not a warning.

Step 2. Enter a reasonable estimate. Forty seconds, before anything else: order of magnitude, answer for a simplified case (two objects instead of ten), a symmetric value, or the mean of a range. A guaranteed zero becomes a nonzero probability. This number now lives alongside the other seven; at 13:40 it will pass format and plausibility.

Step 3. Close the problem permanently. Cross its number off the sheet. There is no return, and “five more minutes” does not exist: five minutes spent here are five minutes not spent on a problem that may still be closed.

Step 4. Name one of the three diagnoses, ten seconds, one word in the margin. Did not recognize the topic— did not understand what the problem concerned. Did not know the method—recognized the topic but not the technique. Broke down in execution—knew the method but lost the count, sign, boundary, or format. Use the same words as on Mock #1 and Mock #2. This is not a solution review—reviews are forbidden today; it is one note that will move into the evening page about how the four hours went.

Step 5. Take the shortest remaining problem by estimate, not the next problem number. After 25 minutes without progress, working memory has dropped, and taking a second hard problem in a row means losing that one too. A closed, easy problem restores both your count and your ability to calculate.

Take the numerical route at minute ten, not minute twenty-five

Five minutes for enumeration, simulation, or SymPy is a move made inside an attempt: if the analytical route is not visible after ten minutes and the outcome space is finite, switch without hesitation. At the ceiling there is no choice left—only estimate in the field and leave. A problem that reaches minute twenty-five is usually one where the numerical route was not chosen in time.

Algorithm
  1. The ceiling is an event with a ready-made response, not a reason to continue: hands off the desk, eyes on the clock. Twenty-five minutes total is an exit, not a warning.
  2. Enter a reasonable estimate in forty seconds. It will pass format and plausibility in the final twenty minutes along with the others.
  3. Close the problem permanently: cross out the number, no return, no “five more minutes.”
  4. One diagnosis word in the margin: did not recognize the topic / did not know the method / broke down in execution.
  5. Choose the shortest remaining problem by estimate, not the next number.

EN

There are no drills today. The only problem work before the start is three problems at 08:30, chosen yesterday evening rather than this morning.

Selection criterion: the problem is already solved, solved without hints, and the three come from different blocks—one probability, one analysis, and one linear-algebra or algorithms problem. The goal is not training or reviewing a method but thirty minutes in which everything works. If one of the three unexpectedly does not go, drop it after three minutes and do not replace it.

No new problem. No walkthrough. No card.

The only mandatory exercise begins at 14:00 and takes an hour: restore the eight statements from memory. Do not postpone it to tomorrow—tomorrow you will recover half as much.

RU

Today’s log gets two entries, and neither is about mistakes.

First: the eight statements, by 15:00, in the lesson’s format. This is material for September 20, and it falls apart within a day.

Second: one page about how the four hours went. When was the last label assigned? How many problems were closed before 11:30? Which problem reached the 25-minute ceiling, and did you leave it immediately? Did both breaks happen—at 11:30 and 12:30? Was there panic, what helped, and how many minutes did it cost? How many fields had to be filled with estimates in the final twenty minutes? For every unsolved problem, use exactly one of three diagnoses: did not recognize the topic, did not know the method, broke down in execution. One word, no review.

Do not write solution reviews today: they will not change the result and will keep you awake with “what if it was different?” September 5 is the reserve attempt day; keep it free in case today’s attempt fails, with no study load scheduled. The next working date is September 6, when the trainer opens again and preparation for the written stage begins.
